Real ID delayed again

Similar, we moved from PA to VA in 2021 so got real ID driver licenses when we got VA ones. We do both have passports, but I would rather just use DL when flying domestically.

Yup, me too. But I also did get the passport card for $30 when it was time to renew the passport.

You're mistaken. It was not in Missouri as I stated previously.

"The Missouri Department of Revenue began offering REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and ID cards on March 25, 2019." Source: https://fox2now.com/news/missouri/real-id-deadline-less-a-year-away-what-missourians-need-to-know/
Oklahoma was even later not starting until July 2020. Both states had in the past made into law against REAL ID thus delaying things even after you account for extensions that came later. Although by now there's been time to get it.

Same with Kentucky. When my husband and I renewed our licenses in December 2018, REAL ID wasn't even an option. A pilot program was established in a few counties (not ours) in 2019, with plans for full rollout by mid-2020. Then COVID struck. I don't think we had a full rollout until late 2021 or early 2022.

We renewed our licenses last week. Hopefully, our REAL IDs will arrive in the mail by the time we fly to Texas for Christmas in two weeks.

Happily if they don't, you'll just go early and follow what the TSA says about flying without ID. Chat, prove what you can prove. Have the proof that you renewed with you.

I'm guessing PP has SOME ID. When I applied, I got my DL back stapled to a piece of paper with the Real ID application on it.

We both got ours when we renewed three and four years ago. I was the one who had to go back with our marriage license since my name changed 40 years ago. Otherwise, not a big deal and it costs $5 in NH.

I did mention taking the proof that they had renewed.
Yes, but you also said to "go early and follow what the TSA says about flying without ID." My response (confirmed by the OP) is they HAVE ID. So there's no point in going early and following the "no ID" procedure.

For TSA they do not accept a temporary DL (REAL ID or not) so you can't just show proof that you've renewed into REAL ID. You would need to show other acceptable proof (or go through the no-ID process).

In my state while they don't always do it they often clip the existing DL and you'll need to use your temporary paper version as the other one is considered invalid once clipped. I have actually been denied purchasing of alcohol at a liquor store years ago with just the temporary annoyingly.

Just to clear that part up, please don't show up at the airport with a renewal application or paper temporary REAL ID without expectation of that potentially being an issue.

Unfortunately, I once had to fly back home after losing my ID. I had to show a credit card (I think) and my checkbook *unbelievably I had it*, answer some identity questions, and got an extra pat down.

I find it odd that they would ask for a marriage license when you have already legally changed your name. If you show your SS card, that should be proof enough. Especially from so long ago. Even getting a passport does not require showing your marriage license. The State where I live has been requiring proof of Identity for many years now so when they real ID rolled around, they already had that info on file. I have never had to show my marriage license at the DMV. I got my SS card first and that was the proof that they needed.

My wife had the same issue. Some of her ID had a middle initial instead of her middle name. She needed to obtain a copy of her first marriage license, 40 years ago, copy of divorce decree and a copy of her second marriage license. A real pita

I don't know about your state (Kansas, right?), but here in Kentucky, we get our original license back, stapled to the back of the Real ID application. So that should work. Hopefully. Actually, I hope we get our licenses before we leave in 13 days.

Regarding alcohol purchases....I hope that doesn't become an issue. My husband was put in charge of buying his boss's yearly cache of Christmas presents (yes, he will be reimbursed). Bottles of the finest Kentucky bourbon. Hopefully, he'll be OK. When he turned 21, Reagan was just completing his second year in office.

The DL would work if not expired or altered but not the REAL I application, that's temporary just like a paper printed out ID is temporary until one is delivered in the mail. At least how it reads, I personally wouldn't show up after the deadline (whenever that happens lol) with an application to give to the TSA. But maybe as time goes on they clarify but online TSA is clear temporary no go and an application seems very temporary to me.

Last time I went was in March my DL was not cut but went in early (expiration date was early May) because we would be in FL the day my license expired. The state says up to 45 days IIRC to get you your REAL ID or DL although it's never taken that long I think I got it back in around 10 or so days. I believe the cut is done when you go much closer to your expiration date as you cannot legally hold two IDs. My DL that expired in 2016 was cut on the corner but I went in about a week before it expired.

Lol most liquor stores are appear under 40 ;) However at that time the liquor store I went to every person purchasing had to have their DL scanned for a time because the store had allowed underage to purchase and were caught, I just got caught up in that narrow time where they had to do that (ETA: although I am under 40 so they could have carded regardless but in practice that store has only carded me one other time). It was annoying but I guess to them it was too temporary the printer out paper I got and my old DL was cut and considered invalid.

I wouldn't even call the paper an "application". It has the existing barcode and I was told anyone could scan it (in addition to still having the hard ID handed back to you).

I think I got my ID within 2 weeks of when I applied. You should be ok. IIRC, there was a way to track what the process was.

One thing the delay does help my family is DS will turn 21 before the deadline, so when he gets his "normal" oriented license (horizontal vs vertical), he can get his Real ID at the time. Doesn't help younger DD though.

Our paper temp ones have a barcode too. The barcode isn't the issue. It's the fact that it's a temp one. I'm just going by the TSA's website which advises temp or interim ones are not acceptable forms of ID.

*I know Sam has me on ignore but anyone can go look up TSA's website for the information.

I thought it was nuts too! I had my passport, original birth certificate and drivers license with me but had to go back home and get the marriage license and bring it back. Different States, different laws...

It's just about a paper trail (however silly we may think that is) of your changes in name. It's all based off of documentation you have either provided in the past or are attempting to provide now. Provide docs with all your name being the same and accurate you're usually good to go. But once you provide a document that does not match another that triggers needing to reflect the paper trail.

I went with all my docs even though my name all matched. I had my updated passport, my updated DL, my updated SSN, and a certified copy of my marriage license (from when I updated my passport), plus the several proofs of residency. Because of what documents I had provided in the past the only two documents I needed was my renewal postcard and my updated passport. Because all names matched that was it. It was noted that the proof of citizenship I used to change my DL when I got married was my passport in my maiden name and so the DMV employee asked "do you have your passport with your married name, I've got it noted old passport in here".

This was heavily discussed in prior threads. In order for me to get a passport in my married name I had to provide a certified copy of my marriage license.

Some of this really depends on how much a state had stayed compliant in the REAL ID and how much paperwork they had been collecting. It was advised for my state if you had been during like 2012-2017 chances are you had provided most of the documents you needed.
