Real Estate Agents, a question about "Sold" signs.

Not only did our house never have a sold sign on it, the for sale sign was still up for over a month after we'd moved in!

We'd take it down and stack it next to our garage, call them AGAIN to tell them to pick it up. Guy who does the signs would come out and reinstall it in our front yard! And we'd start all over again. Finally, we put it inside our garage and the realtor called up and was all agitated about the whereabouts of his sign. LOL We let him stew on it for another month, then dropped it off at his office.

When we bought our home, the selling realtor asked if he could put a "sold" on the sign and leave it up for a while. Well, after a week with no "sold" on the sign, and people stopping to look (the house had been vacant and there is a parking lot across the street), I pulled the sign out of the ground and told the realtor to come get the darn thing!

We just bought a house 2 months ago, and the listing agent never put up a "sold" sign. First it had the regular "for sale" sign, which she then replaced with an "under contract" sign. A couple of days after closing, she came and took the sign and lock box.

My realtor told me to keep my for sale sign up in the window even after i accepted the offer. Mainly it was to keep interest up, if the sale fell through she'd have a list of people who called that she could go back to ("hey, that condo you called about last month, it's available again!"). And I'm sure it was also to help promote herself and drum up new business. No skin off my nose, I don't mind (and it drove my neighbor nuts, and I hated her! ).

Usually around here the most you see is a "contract pending" sign, I don't think I"ve seen a "sold" sign for ages.

Depends. In Missouri they put a "SOLD" sign on as soon as the offer was accepted.

In our house in Texas we did not get it for a few weeks. There was an option period in Texas.
Wasn't really sure why they waited so long. It was a few weeks.

I think it is up to the Agent and thier typical manner of doing business..

I also live in Missouri and the SOLD sign has not gone up on any of the houses I have bought or sold. My agent lived 25 miles away from my town so I figured that she didn't want to come back until the closing. Then she took her sign so she didnt have to make a trip back. She has serious money so she didn't need the exposure.

Sold signs here go up after the inspection contingency is satisfied. Once the house goes "Pending", I put up a Sold sign. The selling agent is given a few days and if they don't put it up, then the listing agent can.

Wow! It sounds like there are some pretty lazy agents out there. Not that I'm surprised - I've dealt with a few. My sign goes up once I get the listing and comes down no later than the day after it closes., regardless of how far it is from my office. I also make sure I have my lock box off the house as soon as the key is delivered. Don't settle for lazy agents. There are good ones out there.
