Real Christmas trees and chemicals

Someone I work with whose child is an asthmatic warned me that the chemicals sprayed on the christmas tree they bought last year triggered his asthma and wanted to warn me about it since my DD has asthma and has been having a rough time this fall.

I didn't realize the trees were sprayed with anything. Any one know anything about this?

I worked at a christmas tree farm in college and the only thing we ever sprayed even close to the trees was round-up, and even that wasn't sprayed on the trees, just around the base. None of it really touched the tree, except maybe an inch at the very bottom, which wouldn't be coming home with you anyway.

Now, this could just be the farm I worked at. I think your best bet is to buy locally grown trees if possible and talk to the farm owner to find out if they do spray anything on them. I'm wondering if stuff might be sprayed on the ones cut early and shipped in to help them last longer or whatever. No idea if this is the case, just wondering.

edited to add that I just noticed you are in NH. I went to school at UNH and the farm I worked at isn't far from there. There are several wonderful tree farms in NH that you could probably pick and choose between. Give 'em a call and see what they have to say!

Cati - wow, I'm sure that was pretty scary for you all. That's a really good suggestion, thank you.

My kids really want a real tree, but my allergies always flare up when we get one and now with my DD's asthma, I don't know...
