OK...so I was at AKV last week as a "renter" for the 6th time...finally decided to jump in with 160 point purchase. Got offered a $97/point contract with any use year I wanted plus 2009 points banked.

So, I left on Friday and called my rep...no response. Called again Monday...no response. Called Tues morning (today)...no response.

Finally called the 800 number and asked why DVC doesn't want my $$$! They apologized and I immediately talked to a rep that will help me out.

My questions are this:

1. Is this a good incentive. I know resale is cheaper...we just don't want to wait and the 2009 bonus points are really good for a big trip we're planning later this year or early next!

2. Did I just piss off the DVC rep that I talked to? I know they work on commission so I don't want to upset these folks. I just want to get into DVC so I can become a full member finally.

Thanks folks!

I think it is a decent incentive and the ease of going through Disney (as well as the quickness of being able to use the points for the reservation) can't be beat.

Keep your eye out though. If, in the next few weeks, the incentives change and get better, and your contract has not closed, you can ask your guide to rewrite it. We did that last year and it was no problem.

A word of advice, you may want to ask that they write your 160 into a 100 point and 60 point contract. Smaller contracts are easier to sell if you ever had to down the road or if you realized you had more points than you needed, you can sell off some and keep some.

I would not worry about offending a guide. If they make their money by selling, and they don't call you back, then its their own issue. Now, there is a chance that the guide has not been working and has not yet gotten your message.

But, good luck!!!!

Your main concern should be your family and you getting your membership. I think you did your guide a favor. It will make your guide realize that he/she needs to do a better job of returning calls quicker. I wouldn't be concerned about them. If they are one of the better guides they are not going to leave and they will be fine. If they are one of the guides on the bottom they are probably on their way out anyway.

Enjoy your points.

Thanks for the replies! I signed up today. I talked to another rep and he was extremely helpful. I FINALLY got a call back from the guy I saw last week. He apologized but I felt he was moving onto his other prey! In any case, I'm glad I got the commission in another rep's hands.

Sandi,
I thought that your initial contract with Disney had to be for at least the min pts of 160. Are you saying that it can be 2 separete contracts totalling 160? I just closed this Sunday. I guess it is too late.
Michelle

Yes...I just closed on 160 points in total. One contract for 100...second contract for 60. Had to ask for that though...but it was a non-issue. I figured that since we have 2 kids, I can give each one a contract later on and I can add to one or the other as we go.

Welcome home... I have issues with the guides not returning calls as well. Kinda ticks me off. I left several messages for my guide during my last trip but she never got back to me. I just figure the next time some one talks to me about signing up I'll just point them towards the re-sale market.

Did you have to pay 2 closing costs? I wonder if they would mind changing mine- I only got the paperwork yesterday and didn't sign anything yet.
Thanks,
Michelle

The minimum you have to buy is 160 but if you ask, Disney has allowed new owners to split that into smaller, with one of at least 100 points. It is not something they advertise but if you ask, they will usually go with it.

You are right, if you have already closed, it is probably too late. But are you sure the closing has actually happened?

Last year, when I was adding on to BLT, my guide was able to pull my contract the night before it was scheduled to close so I could re-write it to get the better incentives that had come out that day.

ETA: I just so your 2nd post--since you haven't even signed, call your guide and tell him you want 100 and 60 and that you know others have done it. You can even mention that you understand that he might have to get it approved through his manager and that you would be more than willing to talk to that person if need be. I don't think you will need to. Good luck!!! And, should be one set of closing costs as they will treat it as a new contract and an add on.

OK...let me clarify everything. I feel as if there is some misunderstanding here...

1. You do NOT have to pay more than one closing cost ($344) to close on more than one contract.

2. MINIMUM AMOUNT OF POINTS - The previous requirement of 160 has been changed (perhaps temporarily) to 100. This means you can get into DVC for 100 points and add on later if you'd like. What I did is have one contract for 100 and a second contract for 60. I asked and I could have done 2 50 point contracts as well. So long as the aggregate points total at least 100 points. Please keep in mind that this is a promotion DVC is offering now. It may not last. However, at $97 per point (112-15 in the current promotion), that comes out to $9700....not bad compared to the 16-17K + you needed before!!!

Now, this is for AKV and not BLT. The points for BLT (IMO) are high now and we travel during the adventure season so reservations will not be as difficult.

Hope this helps!!!

I just wanted to say that I had the opposite problem. I was just trying to do an online chat with a salesperson and they kept saying, "call me on the phone. Let's do this on the phone. I'd be happy to answer that on the phone!"

Honestly I just had a few questions, and they said they couldn't answer them on this "medium." They then ended the online chat abruptly. Why couldn't they answer my questions without the phone call?

I am confused (since I am new here, probably) but I thought you could not negotiate w/Disney on these contracts so how come some people get different offers?

They just can't. I would email our guide with the questions I had, then he would call back with the answers. I would have loved to do it all by email, but they can't.

That's probably just what the current offer is. A certain amount "off" per point, that ends up at 97/point, with 2009 points (for us it was called "incentive points" which was an extra 160 to be used in certain places by a certain time...in past years it was called "developer's points").

No...you cannot negotiate...this is what the current offer was when I was on property last week. Just to clarify...the same offer is available to phone inquiries.

Thanks for clarifying. I am still learning. I'm in my initial research phase. :flower3:

Even for BLT, which has a 160 point minimum, DVC has been allowing members to break up those points into two contracts, as long as the first one is 100. You can't buy only 100 BLT points, but you certainly can get them to give you smaller contracts.

While they are allowing new members to get into AKV or SSR with only 100 points (and not the required 160), the incentives at this level are not as good as if the new member buys 160. But it is great for those that don't want or need to start as high as 160 and have an interest in AKV or SSR.

The other piece is that DVC has also been allowing the incentives to match the TOTAL points, regardless of how many contracts it is broken up in to when bought. So, if you buy 200 points and want 100, 50, and 50, regardless of resort, they have been giving the buyer the incentives for the 200 point level.

Sandi,

I am sorry but the incentives (discounts off per point) are identical at AKV for 160 or 100 points. There are no additional incentives if you get a 160 point contract. The only thing I can think of is the annual passes but you cannot have both. I would rather have $15 off per point. That discount rate at AKV is good for 100 OR 160 point new contracts.

I think Sandi is correct, at just 100 point purchase (not talking about a split of 160 into 100 + 60) it's $2 more per point than a new purchaser would pay at 160pt level. And, an additional incentive is Magical Beginnings : an additional $5 off per point if the purchaser gives up first year's points ( at 100 point purchases and upwards); so some could find this to be worth doing if they weren't going to make use of those points anyhow & they don't want to bother trying to rent them out.

:)

If you split your initial 160 points into two contracts, do you have to pay two closing costs?

Thanks!
