Ready, Set, Go-DC/BG/HHN-RIP in 7 Nights

Love the pics--my DD would've loved to meet your youngest at tennis last year--he's pretty cute.:goodvibes

Thanks to your beautiful pics, Discovery Cove looks like a destination for a future trip--I never wanted to 'til I saw those pics. Very Cool.

WOW! We've never even thought about DC but after your pics that may be something we look into down the road. Keep the pics coming!!!

Loving your TR and pics. The one with the bird on youre head at DC is priceless!!:lmao:

Freshened up we drove back to BLT, took a short break, then hopped on monorail to Poly for dinner @ O'hana. As expected it was packed, after checking in & given pager we headed left past the bar & found comfy seats. DH & DS held down the fort while i bellied up to the bar to grab drinks.

It was crazy busy but the bartender managed to handle the crush easily. While standing/waiting for my turn, i noticed a grumpy dude & his lady sitting on the stools next to me. I couldn't believe when he was presented his bill he started screaming at the bartender that the prices were outrageous:sad2:, evidently he neglected to read the drink menu.:confused3The bartender never flinched and asked if the customer wanted to speak to a manager. I must say the pours were strong and I was quite satisfied with my mai tai.:thumbsup2

Within 10 minutes we were seated at table near the fire pit. Our servers were very busy, but attentive. I believe our table became the drop point for the leftovers on the skewers. The head waiter kept asking DS if he liked his steak. He'd answer "yes" and more would wind up on his plate. He had to have polished off 3 full steaks after the shrimp, chicken & pork. I do believe he finally hit bottom...looking rather green.

ma & pa didn't leave hungry either or sober and that's the way we likes it on vacation;)
WDWBuschGardens10a033.jpg

Another sour note though was a family seated behind us who explained to waiter that he wouldn't be getting a tip because the 'entertainment' wasn't as good as they had expected and the birthday cupcake presentation was 'lame'. Again, the employee was nothing but polite.

This is a pet peeve of mine, both DH & myself have moonlighted over the years as bartenders and always tip well for good service. the economy may be rough, but the employees have to make a living too and certainly don't deserve this sort of treatment.

Skip & a jump back on monorail & we settled in room to watch the fireworks (woo-hoo) and get organized to drive to Tampa tomorrow.

I haven't been to BG since the late 70's, so i expected lots of changes and there were. I can't put my finger on it, but both BG Williamsburg & Tampa are very disjointed to me:confused3. I def give :thumbsup2to Tampa's version though mostly for the serengeti/animals that are superior to Disney's AK offerings imo.

fyi - I used Kelly M's book heavily this trip for Discovery Cove, BG & the updated Universal-Harry Potter section, highly recommend!!!:)thank you

I was surprised when we did enter the park to find that several of the attractions at the top of my to-do list were not in service:headache:: the gondolas, jeep river ride (name escapes me, sorry - but it was abreviated version without the runaway jeep part), and many of the animal attractions on the savannah. Turned out there is a new ride going in, The Cheetah that apparently will take guests on roller coaster ride thru good portion of the park. Many shows were cancelled too that day:confused3. There were many construction barriers and 'you couldn't get there from here' sort of obstacles, but we still had a wonderful day here.

We really enjoyed the topiaries & lush landscaping...
WDWBuschGardens10a039.jpg

...along with the animal exhibits. I'm from the north and the only alligators i've seen in FL have been stationary.:laughing:Entire family was amazed how quickly this bad boy hauled himself up out of the pond by his 'toes' and gave us his best smile.:scared1:

'Kay....I'm a bit behind...sorry :guilty:

Can I just say that this pic
WDWBuschGardens10c013.jpg

cracks me up! I have the mental image of them just swimming along and talking about the tourists  (think along the lines of Finding Nemo  )

Anyhow...totally lovin' DC. We've wanted to go for awhile, your pix ain't helpin! But...will heed advice for noodle for lazy river...(I likes it that way ;) ) As for the birds...idk 'bout them. :scared: Had traumatic experience as child....at the zoo, birds flew overhead and one "hit"me :sad2: Didn't enjoy the whole thing....so, if one were to land on mai head, I'd be fearful of the same thing happenin again. But...I'm willing to give it a try :thumbsup2

DC just looks like a great day. You didn't mention your eats while there?

Also..any reason to shower there? I mean, if you're going right back to your hotel (or wherever), and can shower there, guess there's no reason to wait to shower there?

Altho I'm sure the water is cold (esp for dolphin swim), def. on bucket list (sooner rather than later hopefullly :goodvibes )

sorry to hear BG wasn't all you'd thought it'd be :( Sux when monkey wrenches thrown into plans :sad2:

idk if we'll ever make it there, but good to know "the Kelly book" was ever so helpful :thumbsup2 (you just CAN'T go wrong w/ that book, can ya?)

anyhow....i really don't think son is "enjoying the topiaries" in this pic....

We really enjoyed the topiaries & lush landscaping...
WDWBuschGardens10a039.jpg

:lmao: sorry...but it LOOKS like the exact opposite! (don't worry...i know he was glad to be on vacay :teeth: )

Where's food pix from O'hana?
4.gif
You know you're supposed to take pix! (i don't care WHAT the boys say! you have a responsibility to us!!!)

Your DH cracks me up in that pic....long lost family member? :rolleyes1

oh...and i agree re: peeps at next table. Servers have a living to make to and get paid crap! Even IF the service IS subpar, people need to take that into consideration...esp when they are splitting tips up and such. I know I'm not the only one who HATES that servers aren't paid AT LEAST minimum wage. I think it's wrong and wish I could do something to help change it.

food pics r verboten, otherwise i get the cranky looks (i.e. the why do i have to pose for a pic w/a plant look;)) the rest of the night.

i thought the same thing re the fish. They (and the rays which was a bit un-nerving the 1st few times) would come right up to you to check you out at times, then go about their way.

DC food was notch above typical cafeteria food imo all you can eat/drink. Beer at the stands, Im not a bud fan but they had an ale-type on draft that was decent.

continental type breakfast: pastries, cereal, yogurt, lots of fruit, coffee, tea, milk, juices, bottled water

lunch: chicken stir fry, salmon, hamburger platter (think there was a veggie one too), pasta, salads, hot dogs, cold sandwiches, probably other stuff im forgetting lots of different types of desserts

snacks: they had hot pretzels, chips, etc. at the bars, ice cream too.

after a day in salt water & covered in sand i yearned for a shower;). It was only low 60's, felt chilled once the wet suit was removed, glad to change into dry clothes. didn't even want to consider the short trip back to hotel feeling & looking so gritty. we just underdressed bathing suits in the am, no biggie to shower & change. Nice to be able to knock all the sand off our gear in their shower room too:rolleyes1vs our hotel bathtub.

I had decided to book the rhino/giraffe safari add on @ BG, then talked into feeding the kangaroos for couple dollars more. Waited until we arrived and signed up @ guest services. I highly recommend the experience!!! from memory believe it was $35 or so pp.

I picked an early trip before the sun got too strong, gave us time to explore a bit & grab quick lunch since we always skip breakfast on vacation. They were getting ready for their halloween after hours events. Several of the employees were quick to point out that it was geared to teens/twenty somethings & was heavy on more raw/sexual content vs pure horror.

all the wildlife here isn't wild, this guy kept trying to climb my leg!

WDWBuschGardens10c067.jpg

hugest tortises ive ever seen, this one was good 4 feet in length

we met back at our prearranged time and boarded the truck. You were grouped with others (all repeats in our group except us) and basically held onto the side of the truck while you toured the savannah and had guide explain along with a photographer (very low key! refreshing change of pace).

"most" of the giraffes were very sweet & would tolerate petting, guess which one wouldn't below:

ding, ding, we have a winner! This guy wasn't amused;)& let me know it with both the evil eye & odd warning growl type noise!

WDWBuschGardens10a087.jpg

WDWBuschGardens10a083.jpg

next into the rhino pen, we stepped out of truck and met this big boy

WDWBuschGardens10c030.jpg

and his keeper who went into detail as to rhinos and conservation efforts. The males are very dangerous and are kept away from guests but the general tour goes thru savannah where there were 2 babies.

WDWBuschGardens10a107.jpg

we were told that if the mama started to charge to hold on tight, they can move quite fast for their size
WDWBuschGardens10a104.jpg

we kicked around a bit in egypt area, montu was pretty cool; no line as construction walls seemed to discourage most folks.

Then looped back thru savannah to train station. Wound up getting up at next stop vs the one closest to 'roos as it was such a 'pokey' train it was quicker to walk;)

I need to start hanging out in the trip report threads more often. I was late to both Bubba's Mom's and your trip reports. Fortunately, I got caught up. It was great meeting you and your family on the RIP tour and then seeing you all again at IOA.

Great pics of BG.:thumbsup2

Not alot of people know about the jewel in Tampa!!!!

Really enjoying your TR, Janet! And glad that you got to experience the giraffe safari. We also had one giraffe that wasn't very cooperative - maybe it was the same one!

Wasn't the kangaroo feeding just the sweetest thing?!?!? We loved it. One of those little fellas reached out and put both paws around my arm as I was feeding it. Greg wanted to take one home with us!

Looking forward to the remainder of your report!

im a strong swimmer, but was happy to have a noodle in the lazy river after the 3rd go-around in the afternoon...i slept like a log that night.

I wish we'd seen the noodles - I would have enjoyed the lazy river much more if I'd been able to float around a bit in the deeper water sections. :guilty:

Also..any reason to shower there? I mean, if you're going right back to your hotel (or wherever), and can shower there, guess there's no reason to wait to shower there?

I wondered this too before we visited, but I was glad to wash the sand and the super thick, white suntan lotion off me before I got changed. :thumbsup2

keishashadow - The giraffe safari and visit with the kangaroos looks great. It's been a few years since we've visited BG - we've been waiting for DD to be tall enough to ride all the coasters before we go back - but the safari would definately be something we would enjoy. :goodvibes

thanks for the info. glad you put it in your trippie...because when we are ready to go, and I can't remember, I'm going to ask YOU. and when YOU can't remember, you can refer to your report

Really enjoyed this part of report. Have never been to BGT before...on the "list" :rolleyes1 Will def make sure we include this. Had no idea it was even there.

LOVE this pic

LOOKOUT!!! Ticked off soccer-Mom on wheels :lmao:

kay...I'm ready for more.... :surfweb: ...ya know...since MY weekend report is finished and all ....jus' sayin'.... :rolleyes1

tink, too i still had a faint base tan from the summer so we skipped the suntan goo;). weird thing about FLA is nobody in my family (knock on wood) has ever burnt in any of the parks:confused3. We do tend to head for the shade and many activities are inside via rides/shows, we have gotten our share of sun @ the beaches though...so i know the sun is wicked there

wanted to work in the Atlantis water park but ran out of time again

barb - u must pencil in BG, the new ride should be done by next summer season. It'd be good day or so prior to cruise activity out TPA imo. Just wish they'd have more options out of that port, realize the bridge hinders the larger ships. speaking of, believe ur summer TR is started.

will be back to finish this TR
