Joe--we eat peanuts but they are not boiled at least I don't think they are. And why are they green. :confused3 . We prefer to shell them I guess.

Basically the two ways to prepare peanuts are roasting and boiling. The peanuts that you are used to are roasted, as Rhonda said.

Green mean that they are raw, unprocessed peanuts, not that they are green in color. What you do is get a big, old black cast iron pot, fill it with water, add salt, dump in the raw peanuts (that have been cleaned and soaked in cold water for an hour or so) and boil them for 4 or 5 hours. This is usually done outside over a fire. You only boil what you will be able to eat within a day or so because they do not keep well. You can freeze them for later but they just aren't the same if you do.

I don't know anybody that buys them in a can or package. Maybe from a road side stand where you knew they were fresh but never from a store.

Since the peanuts need to be fresh from the ground you only boil peanuts in the late summer and early fall.

Beer, or sweet tea, is also required to eat boiled peanuts :thumbsup2

Ash[/B] - Did you watch Studio 60 yet? I was absolutely IN LOVE with this episode! Fantastic. There was one part in particular that was so good that I rewound it and watched it again (I won't say what until I know I'm not spoiling anyone who may have DVR'd/TIVO'd it.)

I'm still catching up, but wanted to respond. I DID watch most of it (AFTER I checked out of chat...saying I was going to bed....Well, I watched if from bed.) However, I missed the first 20 minutes or so. I have it on TiVo, so will probably re-watch tonight. Gilmore Girls tonight, too!!!

Oh, and YES, I did enjoy it more than last week! Have to watch it in its entirety, though, to get the "full effect".

I have a meet count upwards around 50+, but that includes all the family and friends. I THINK we have about 20 or 21 DISers (counting one or two who are not regular Maelstrommers).

Okay, back to catching up...............

Last edited by UtahMama : Today at 10:21 AM. Reason: What show are you watching without me? You're making it sound good!
That would be Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, U-Ma. 10:00 on Monday night. Not sure of the network (NBC, me thinks). Join the fun!

MG and YAJ!!!!! Welcome back, kids! We missed you. Tell us more. How was the trip? Any hints for those of us heading down this week? (hahahahaha, told ya you'd be jealous of us after we had to be jealous of you.....)

Jay just called and said, "So what kind of trip prep things did you get done last night?" (He didn't get home 'til I was asleep.) I said "Ummmmm, none." Basically, I helped with homework, caught up on some TiVo (Ellen & Desp. Housewives) and chatted!! Guess I should try to be productive tonight!! Really, though, I'm pretty much packed. Other than getting stuff ready for the kids (clothes for school next week, etc.), and cleaning the house a little, I don't think I have much to do. What am I forgetting??? :confused3

I'm going out to get some fresh air. A novel idea!!

Last edited by GeorgiaAristocat : Today at 11:58 AM. Reason: I'm tempted to not edit this one either. but, I need to say (quietly) that this Southerner does NOT like boiled peanuts. blech.

Thought you could sneak this by me, didja?? Girl, when these people meet you, and hear you talk, they will know you are not a Native Southerner (although probably most of them have already heard you talk, on the phone). And it could be that boiled peanuts are only likeable to Native Southerners. I LOVE me some boiled peanuts. Love 'em, I say. Cooked like Joe said. There's a man I know who doesn't really float my boat. But he can cook up a mean mess of boiled peanuts. So I am nice to him. And when he boils peanuts, he brings me some. :teeth: It is almost worth it to be nice to him. I think.

Years ago, my uncle and my dad worked at what used to be Roddenberry's. They made pickles, peanut butter, syrup, and Peanut Patch boiled peanuts (which I believe YAK posted a picture of... please ignore the preposition at the end of the sentence). My uncle (13 years my senior) used to pick me up from kindergarten and we'd go home and open all the (canned that day) dented cans of boiled peanuts that he got to bring home from work. We'd sit in the den floor eating boiled peanuts and dripping peanut juice all over everything. Those were Good Times. Joe~that is the only acceptable time to eat boiled peanuts out of a can. When you KNEW they had been canned that day, after being cooked in the way (basically, just on a larger scale) that you described.

If you've never tried them, I say this: if you like cooked beans (pintos, black beans, etc), you would most likely enjoy boiled peanuts. And Joe is right~they go best with beer. Though a Co-Cola is also acceptable. One southern thing I never got was dropping shelled, roasted (and salted) peanuts into a bottle (or later, can) of said Co-Cola. My granddad used to do that. Never did much for me! Joe, want to weigh in on that?

How kind of you, Ed! To show our appreciation to Ed, for finding this fine work of art, I believe we should periodically bump it throughout the day, to ensure that no one (skimming) misses it.

Yup, Ed......that's exactly what my firemen look like.

Sher - whew. No need to go to DS! I guess it'll be first come first served, anyway ;) :teeth:

Sweet Tea.....{{{{{SHUTTER}}}}}}}}}} But I do miss fresh unsweet!
All we have here in Canada is Nestea. If you order iced tea, that's what you get {{{{{{{Double SHUTTER}}}}}}} It's really gross!!

I better get back at it.

Tater, laters!!!

And I don't know that you'd really enjoy canned boiled peanuts. Sort of like eating canned spinach (sorry Popeye) or canned salmon. Edible under the right circumstances and in the right recipe? Sure. Fresh boiled peanuts, on the other hand, are exceptional. Divine. Sublime. So, eat the canned ones at your own risk. . .

Thanks Grammy. Strangely, one of mine does expire this month. I went to activate yesterday (here at work), and, there it was, bold as brass on the front of the card, that it MUST be activated from your HOME PHONE.
Well, that's not totally true about it being a "must." If you want to go the automated route without talking to a living being, then yes, you do need to be at your home phone number since the computer program "reads" that number then activates your card via electrons. However, if you aren't at your home phone or you want to talk to a live person, then they can and will activate the card for you.

Sher-please transfer Amy's flag to me..... I will hang it off of the plaque she got for me......

OH AMY! :lmao: I am indeed :lmao:

Also I would love to hear how/when you worked Princess Bride quotes into court..... I am :rotfl: at the possibilities

As another non-native Southerner: I will say boiled peanuts can be an acquired taste. I hated them at first but after marrying into a family as about as deep South as you can get I find that I do like them (the boiled peanuts that is... I always liked the family even when they make me ill or someone is acting ugly) The key is having the peanuts cooked correctly as described above and fresh! You have to personally know someone named Bubba or Junior who will cook them for you.... also it is best if they are cooked from immature peanut pods so it helps if Bubba owns a small farm and will harvest the boiling peanuts a few days early. I like boiled peanuts with a Co-cola but my inlaws prefer Mountain Dew... which they call "drink" as in "Do you want tea with that Shugah or drink?" The tea, of course, is iced and sweet and brewed at home.

Rhonda, I think they were really supposed to be dropped in an RC, not a Coke but in my younger days (a very long time ago) I tried them in both and other than having wet peanuts with bubbles on them I didn't get it either. I prefered them separate.

I always thought this went along with being able to get high by dropping an aspirin in your Coke

 Though I now prefer a Diet Pepsi, back in the day, when RC came in a bottle without a twist top, ummmmm, my all time favorite

Holy Crap Joe!!!!! You mean you can't???? :teeth:

Just so you all know I saw these canned peanuts at a road side stand in Georgia when we bought fresh peaches. Hubby bought a bag of roasted ones there to which taste the same as here.
