I am reading "The Da Vinci Code" and it is very interesting. Also, lately I have been reading Robert Parker again, I really enjoy the Spenser mysteries.
The new Nickolas Sparks book The Wedding is very good and would be a good book for a discussion group. The new John Grisham is also good but I don't think it would lend itself to a good discussion group especially of women. Crazy Ladies by michael Lee West was another good one.
I recently read "the secret life of bees," a simple book that is filled with lots of symbolism
The peoples history of the united states was good, it's a nonfiction, totally liberal, borderline communistic take on US history, has caused great discussion between DH and I.
For nonfiction, try Vinyl Leaves: Walt Disney World and America by sociologist Stephen M. Fjellman. It'll give you great insight into the workings and infrastructure of WDW, not to mention the cultural ramifications of the Disney theme parks.
For fiction, try Life of Pi by Yann Martel. It has nothing to do with math and everything to do with tigers and survival.
Read The Poisonwood Bible and Life of Pi a couple of months ago, both excellent books!
I just finished Strand of a Thousand Pearls by Dorit Rabinyan, and now I'm into Crow Lake (lol) by Mary Lawson. Next up on the book pile is Atonement by Ian McEwan. I stocked up before DH left on a trip!
I just finished "Under the Tuscan Sun" It may not have enough for a book club discussion, but it was beautifully written and one of the best books I've read in a while.
I read a lot of non-fiction which I know is not usually what people read, esp. in book groups. I just finished a book called School of Dreams. It was excellent and would provide a lot of discussion if it was for a group of parents of school age children. It's about a school in Southern California, about standardized testing and the expectations that some parents (esp. first generation American's) have for their children.
I am awful about remembering the names of the books I read. Last week I read a book called something about the future homemakers of america. I can't remember the exact name, but it did offer a study guide at the end for use in a book club. It was about military wives and it followed their lives for several years. Right now I am reading a book called Hoot. I can't tell you who wrote it, but its really good. Last week I did Confessions of a Dangerous Mind on tape. It was really strange, but really good and it held my attention.
I am currently reading "Ciao America" by Beppe Severgnini - It's a fantastic book, with alot to discuss.....
I am also reading Christopher Moore's latest "Fluke"
Next on the list are "Dry" by Augusten Burroughs & "Orange Crush" by Tomothy Dorsey.
I always have to have at least one of the wall comedy going at a time & have an upstairs book & a downstairs book, so I am never without handy reading material......
One is young mothers and we spend "a little" time discussing the book. We particularly like to read books about womens clubs....like the Ya Yas or Sweet Potato Queens...fun stuff.
