What paperback should I take with me to read on deck? I like the usual's, John Grisham, Stephen King, James Patterson. Anyone have suggestions on a really good book? I haven't had time to read for pure pleasure in a few years, unless you count the digital photography for Dummies I just got.

Well, It appears that you will be leaving in 12 days so the new Harry Potter book will be out! Of course, that won't be in paperback yet.

My recommendations would be:

1. Postmortem by Patricia Cornwell. That is the first book in her wonderful series of books about Kay Scarpetta, a medical examiner. The whole series of books is great, although the older ones are better, in my opinion.

2. Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer. It is a kids book that they said would rival Harry Potter, but it really didn't. The book, however, is pretty entertaining and I enjoyed it, I just don't think it is necessarily the greatest kids book as Artemis is a snotty little bad guy, but the hero of the books. :)

Try Jimmy Buffett's Where Is Joe Merchant . It would be perfect during a relaxing cruise.

It seems you might like mysteries since you read John Grisham books. I have been reading (and loving) a series of books by Janet Evanovich about a bounty hunter named Stephanie Plum. The books are hilarious and fast-paced! I think they would be perfect for reading on vacation. The first book is called "One for the Money". I highly recommend these books.

YES!!! I was going to say this very same thing. I love this series of books: One for the Money, Two for the Dough, etc. They are fantastic. I also have the first few on audio tape but am saving them for the drive to Florida for DCL. You do not have to read them in order, but I did start that way and am glad I did. I think I'm up to number 5, which is pretty good for me as I work full time and have 3 kids, so pleasure reading has been pretty slim. Guess I could do more of that though if I left these disboards alone! :p Stephanie Plum (the main character) is a girl/woman with a lot of "spunk"--a hilarious read.

hilltopfamily,

I literally just finished reading the fifth Stephanie Plum book like 10 minutes ago! I got it out of the library this afternoon and had a hard time putting it down! I did manage to make dinner for my family and run some errands, but I finished reading the book in one afternoon/evening. My family wonders what I am reading when they hear me chuckling to myself! My mother is just like Stephanie Plum's mother!

What a great idea for a thread! This could end up in the great-thread archives someday. I can see it now -- Important: What book should I bring?

If you like Stephen King, his last novel was pretty good (From a Buick 8). Unfortunately, it won't be out in paperback until November... so you may need to save that for your next cruise.

Have you read all of Patterson's books? Pop Goes the Weasel is one of my favorites... and it is in paperback form.

btw... if you like novels, but don't have time to read... you should check out Audible.com. They have a large selection of "books on tape" (many are unabridged) that you download off the internet. Then you can put them on an mp3 player (they sell these) or burn them to cds. I have a 25 minute drive to and from work... and get through many unabridged novels by listening for 50 minutes a day.

Bassoongirl:

You go, girl! On to number 6 for you. Only problem I have is what you mentioned---life gets in the way when I'm in the middle of one of her books. Also, LOL about your comment on chuckling out loud while reading--I have done this many times also. :p

Happy reading to all!

P.S. Thought of another author I enjoy a lot. Lawrence Block writes VERY dark mystery/crime stories. They are extremely addictive, pretty grizzly, and keep you wondering until the end. The ones I like involve the character Mathew Scudder and the books are listed that way (i.e. another Mathew Scudder novel) as he also writes about Bernie and Tanner characters in his numerous books. Only problem with this author--he puts out about 1 Mathew Scudder book a year and I can read it in less than a week. :(

Hi Samsma.

What paperback should I take with me to read on deck?

After reading this thread I discussed the topic with "Buckaroo" while we had breakfast. He wanted me to post his recommendation for a good childrens' series to be read while traveling by plane or car.

Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants series. They are hilarious...

Another good author for mysteries is Sue Grafton.
She has a whole series dealing with the alaphbet. A is for Alabi and so on. She is grat. The stories are progressive, but you can start anywhere.
I too would rather read than anything.

Thanks guys! I'm off to the bookstore today. I'm going to need a back to back cruise to get all this done. Maybe I won't spend so much time at the dessert table. The others on this cruise just might have a chance at the food! LOL

I belong to a book club at work and we have read some good books. My favorite is The Red Tent, by Anita Diamante. Another good one is Expecting Adam, by Martha Beck. The Mitford Series is light and fun, I think there are about 6 of them. We also all liked The Lovely Bones, which I read sitting by the adult pool in January! Enjoy!!

I just finished "The Immortals" by Michael Korda. A very good read.

Anything by Michael Korda is good.:D

I'm failing to see the problem with this....

Any books by these authors are well-worth the read - I suggest reading the first one they wrote and working chronologically through their books (often things will tie in from early works to later ones)

True Crime Mysteries - Ann Rule

Treasure Hunting Adventures - Clive Cussler

Adventure and Drama/Political - (Lord) Jeffrey Archer

Adventure and Excitement - Stuart Woods

Historical Romance - Bertrice Small

Okay...it's not a paperback...but I'd recommend "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown. It was fantastic! It's currently #1 on the Best Seller list so you should be able to get it at a discount (BJ's, Barnes & Noble and Borders all discount current bestsellers).

This book is well worth lugging the hardcover edition.

Have a great cruise.

I highly recommend the Thursday Next novels by Jasper Fforde.
The first is out in paperback (The Eyre Affair) and the second just recently came out in hardback (Lost in a Good Book).

I'm leaving out in a week. I'm hoping to pick up the next Harry Potter before getting on the ship. Just in case I don't get a chance to, I'm going to look into some of the recommended books from above.

To second some of the suggestions:

Lovely Bones - Excellent Book
Secret Life of Bees - Also Excellent

Just started to read Daddy's Little Girl and am waiting for the kids' Harry Potter Book 5 delivery on June 21 (they're actually doing a countdown for that - had to order 2 because I'm sure one won't wait till the other's finished! )
