Read any good books lately?

A great summer read... a great thick book so may be too much for the cruise.... but all together great for a week at the beach...

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

It has time travel, romance, history, romance, and Scotland all mixed up in a great story... if you love it you'll be glad to know the story continues in a series...

Hi Samsma.

After reading this thread I discussed the topic with "Buckaroo" while we had breakfast. He wanted me to post his recommendation for a good childrens' series to be read while traveling by plane or car.

Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants series. They are hilarious...

Another Captain Underpants fan on the cruise. DS read almost all of them (I found them to be of little literary value - but anything to get him to read).

I'm personally waiting on the 5th Harry Potter book (I'll probably have it finished by August). I've also discovered the paperback books based on the Quantum Leap series. They're not bad.

I don't know if they are available in all areas...but I would think so..especially B & N.....a series of books written by a lady who
lives here on Hilton Head....and the stories take place on Hilton Head, Beaufort and the Low Country...they are romance/thriller/
mystery books.

The authors name is Kathryn Wall. There are three books as of now, you would need to read them in chronological order...the
first is IN FOR A PENNY, the second is NOT A PENNY MORE and
the third is PERDITION HOUSE. The first two are large paper backs and the third is a hard back book.

I recommend them highly...and we too, are waiting on Harry Potter.....

Have a great weekend everyone...

Her series of books are light and easy to read. The kind you can read a few pages, stop to chat for a while and the get right back into it. I was so excited to find out that her newest book "To the Nines" comes out July 15 and I will cruise 11 days later. (Penny I'm sure I will finish this book in line waiting to board, I will lend it to you on the ship.)

Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold is an AWESOME book (in my top 20) but I personally think it's a bit "heavy" for a cruise. Since I have a 12 y/o daughter it was a bit hard emotionally to read.

Lately, I have been reading "mind candy" like books by Jane Green (Mr. Maybe, Jemima J) and Marian Keyes.

My SON and HUBBY LOVES Captain Underpants!

Okay, mission accomplished. After much debate I finally bought the first two Stephanie Plum books. The girl at Walden Books was also a big fan. I picked up Pop Goes the Weasel twice and put it back down in favor of the two I bought. I have a VERY high maintenance 4 year old along with work, so I really have fallen behind with my reading. I forgot to mention I also like the Sudden Prey, etc. series, and also Hannibal Lector. Hello Clarice! Anthony Hopkins is so hot! But that's another subject for another thread, and possibly another discussion board!

My recent faves are.....Fortune's Rocks.......The Survivor's Club....and.......Beach House.....Enjoy!

Samsma,

Good choice on buying the first two Stephanie Plum novels! I really think you will enjoy them. The books are perfect for a cruise!

How about Cruising for Murder? Its listed in the Passporter and sounds very appropriate.

This is a great thread. Here are some good Vacation/Summer Reads:

Mystery/Suspense:

Tell No One or Gone for Good by Harlan Coban
24 Hours or Sleep No More by Greg Iles
Shocking Pink by Erica Spindler
The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown

Romance/Chick Books:

The Irish Trilogy: Jewels of the Sun, Tears of the Moon, and The Heart of the Sea by Nora Roberts
The Coast Road by Barbara Delinsky
Summer Sisters by Judy Blume

I just bought the first J. Evanovich for my trip to the beach. My cruise isn't until next year, but I needed a good book for this trip. Thanks for the suggestions!

So ther are 8 books in the Stephanie Plum series? I searched on Amazon and only came up with, One for the Money, Two for the Dough, Three to get Deadly, Seven Up, High Five, Four to Score? Which ones am I missing and what is the released order so I read them in order?

Also I may get the Postmortem, Body of Evidence and All that Remains by Patricia Cornwell. Is there an order to those books?

Thanks!

The release order:

1 - One for the Money
2 - Two for the Dough,
3 - Three to get Deadly
4 - Four to Score
5 - High 5
6 - Hot Six
7 - Seven Up
8 - Hard Eight
9 - To the Nines (Not yet released)

I believe they also sell 1,2 and 3 in one larger book. Not sure about the rest.
Here is another vote for Janet E though She is awesome. Anything by James Patterson is good too.

Thanks all, I thought that was the order from the titles but need to check Amazon again for #6 and #7 :) and then read quick and be ready for number 9.

Another good beach read author is Jennifer Crusie. They are easy to read and I usually spend a lot of time laughing while I'm reading them. Some of the more recent titles are:
Faking It
Fast Women
Welcome to Temptation
Crazy for You
Tell Me Lies
The titles are somewhat misleading though!
Also, I love to read the Tom Clancy Net Force series, both the shorter Jr. Net Force books and the the longer grownup versions.

My Harry Potter has been shipped so it should be here by Sat. I can't wait to get started on it (probably have it done before the cruise though).

Thanks for all the great suggestions! I just started the Stephanie Plum series & it is great! I got One for the Money at the library - finished it in 2 days. I hope the next is just as much fun to read.

I have to agree with everyone about the Janet Evanovich books. They are great vacation books. I just wish she would write a little faster. Also try FULL HOUSE, FULL TILT and one other. They are almost as good as the Stephanie books.
Other favorite authors are:
Patricia Cornwell
Sue Grafton
John Grisham
Jonathon Kellerman
Sara Paretsky
James Patterson
Kathy Reich
Stephen White
Stuart Woods
All good vacation books!
