Anyone read any good books lately? I just finished the Janet Evanovich "Stephanie Plum" series and loved them. I'm going for surgery next week, so I'm looking to go to the library to stock up and/or load up my Kindle with some good books to read while I'm out of commission for a few weeks.

If you like mystery series with a female lead similar to the Plum books, try these:

Alexandra Barnaby series (only 2 so far) by Janet Evanovich
FBI Thriller series by Catherine Coulter
Crimes of Fashion series by Ellen Byerrum
Flower Shop Mysteries by Kate Collins
Molly Forrester series by Sheryl Anderson
Maddie Springer Series by Gemma Halliday
Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz

The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I read it simply based on how highly it was rated on Amazon, and was happy I did.

Although I don't "listen" to books, this is great for those who do - so I have heard.

JC Hutchins, 7th Son. Its a tight thriller about a mad man and seven strangers brought together to stop him. Edge of the seat stuff !!!

ETA - available on Kindle.

I've started going through Georgette Heyer's Regency Romances - they vary in quality, but most are pretty enjoyable. Try Friday's Child.

Depending on what you are interested in I can recommend a few:

If you love stories with heart and love I would really recommend "Dear John" It's not a big book, it's pretty easy read but I loved the story behind it.

If you are interested in Mysteries I would recommend anything by Patricia Cornwell, those are pretty intense. Depending on your mood, I would try to seek out the Kay Scarpetta series that she has.

I've started to like some of Michael Connelly's books. But I've only read a couple.

I did just finish "Deception Point" by Dan Brown.

I could go on and on but at the moment I'm drawing a blank trying to figure out what I've recently read and what I have in my "library" at home. If I think of others I'll post again. :)

I've read tons of good books lately. Just a few you might like..

Still Alice by Lisa Genova
The Shack by William P Young
The Strain by Guillermo del Toro & Chuck Hogan
Sookie Stackhouse Series (True Blood) by Charlaine Harris
The Middle Place by Kelly Corigan
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
The Host by Stephenie Meyer
The Doomsday Key by James Rollins

I've read tons more, but those are some of the more mainstream books that are highly rated by most everyone that has read them. :)

Are those still around? I read them in middle/high school!!!

I read a ton, so it depends what you like

Popular authors I like include:
Dan Brown
Daniel Silva (truly one of the best ever)
Patricia Cornwell (pathologist is main character)
Lee Child
Lincoln Child & Douglas Preston
Suzzanne Brockmann
Kathy Reichs (TV show Bones is based on her main character)
Stieg Larsson
James Rollins
Robin Cook (medical/criminal dramas)

Pretty much anything by these authors is a winner. A thought, depending on your surgery you may not be up to reading, I am at home right now following a surgery and cancer treatment, etc. I find it hard to concentrate. My library allows me to download audio copies of books and I have done much better with listening to stories this past month than actually reading.

Let me know if you like trashy romance novels, I can also provide a list of authors in that genre as well.

Yeah, and they are currently being republished with new covers and making it onto the front table at Barnes and Noble. Its rather funny.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I read it simply based on how highly it was rated on Amazon, and was happy I did.

I was going to post this, too, and I've read many books since. Edited to add another recent book that was excellent - Sarahs Key.

My favorite all time book is "THe Glass Castle". I even bought if my my MIL for Christmas and she loved it.

I also loved The Help. I just finished reading it and I was sad when it ended. My dsis told me the audio tape is fantastic too!

I just got the Kindle for Christmas!
I just finished:
The Crossroad's Cafe by Deborah Smith (was free but now 9.99)
Suite Scarlette by Maureen Johnson (right now it's free)

Both were wonderful reads and very light hearted!

Right now I'm reading The Help and loving it!

I am a big Evanovich fan and have read all of her books. I am also a big
fan of Marian Keyes. She has a new book coming out the end of Jan., but
you could select any one of her books and be very happy. They are wonderful.

I also recommend the Shopoholic sereis, very entertaining.

I love this thread, I'm always looking for that next book...thanks!

I second Water for Elephants. I finished it over the christmas break and LOVED it.

I'd also recommend:
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card
Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane

These are three of my favorite books of all time, besides Harry Potter of course!

Nicole

I will second (or third) Water for Elephants, The Help, The Red Tent, and The Host. I did not love the Sophie Kinsella books tho'. And if you haven't read the Twilight series, you should!! The books are way better than the movies. I first mentioned the Sookie Stackhouse series because it is a series. I love series because I hate it when a good book ends!!
