I'm looking for recommendations for my winter reading list. You know - when the wind is howling and the snow is piling up outside my door.

I belong to a great online book swap and I'm looking for ideas to add to my "wish list". I prefer mystery/thriller/romance.

So, what's everyone reading? I'm currently in the middle of the Stephanie Plum Series by Janet Evanovich.

Marker by Robin Cook! It was a great book....and I have read all the stephanie Plum books as well. Have you read any of the Sue Grafton series? She does the "A" is for Alibi and so on....I think the last one I have in that series is "S". Those could last a while for your reading list!

Oh, get The Thirteenth Tale, by Diane Setterfield. It was fantastic - just the thing for a cold winter day. I am planning to reread it this winter - I read it in a day and a half last week for the first time. It's a new twist on the classic Gothic Jane Eyre/Rebecca story. I loved it!!!

Another great book I read this year was Water for Elephants. I can't think of the author now! It's a story of a young man who joins a traveling circus as a vet, and his adventures with that lifestyle. The story is told as he looks back at the end of his life. I totally thought I would not get into it, since it's so different from anything I've ever read, but it was amazing, and I enjoyed it immensely.

Have you read Sue Monk Kidd? Both The Secret Life of Bees and The Mermaid Chair are good reads.

I have The Memory Keeper's Daughter on my bedside table, to start this weekend. I've heard good things about the story.

A second vote for Water for Elephants. I LOVED it!!! Just an amazingly crafted story.

The Mermaid Chair is another one I really enjoyed recently as well!

If you're looking for funny, any of the Adrian Mole books by Sue Townsend are HILARIOUS. I laughed out loud all the way through them. Some of the funniest stuff I've ever read. You need to read them in order, though.

I'm reading Devil in the White City right now, and I'm really into it.

Another vote for The Thirteenth Tale. I love this book and I'm recommending it to everyone I see. :teeth:

If you like mysteries, I've really enjoyed Donna Andrews' books. Particularly the Meg Lanslow mysteries--they're hysterical. They all have birds in the title--We'll Always Have Parrots, Owls Well that Ends Well, etc.

THANKS!! I've added all of your recommendations to my list! :thumbsup2

Any others out there?

I just finished reading The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. It's her memoir of growing up in a very dysfunctional family and coming out OK. It's sad, but moving.

I am so glad to see two of my books in my reading pile are being recommended: The Glass Castle and The Thirteenth Tale

I would recommend Arthur & George and The Rule of Four. Arthur & George is a historical fictional account Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and a friend. The Rule of Four is along the lines of The DaVinci Code...but a better read. The Amber Room is a good one too!!

I just finished the 3rd book in the Circle Trilogy by Nora Roberts. They are pretty good. I had a hard time getting into the first one but then I just tore through the others. The first book is Morrigan's Cross, then Dance of the Gods, and finally Valley of Silence.

Good light reading: Little Earthquakes, In Her Shoes, and Good In Bed (all by Jennifer Weiner)

Good lighter reading: Confessions of a Shopaholic, Shopaholic Takes Manhattan and Shopaholic Ties the Knot (all by Sophie Kinsella)

I just picked up Thirteenth Tale but have not read it yet. I also want to read Wicked.

Stopped at the library today at lunch and picked up The Thirteenth Tale.

Thanks for the great recommendations! :yay:

I loved this trilogy. My favorite was the last one--oh so good! I, too, had a problem with the first book (well, the first few chapters). This is a very good trilogy.

I'm currently reading Susanna's Garden, by Debbie Macomber. I guess one reason I enjoy it is that the women are more "mature" (50 yo) and the main character's addressing a "real" problem-having to put her aging and ailing mother in a nursing home, while she's also dealing with a college-aged daughter.

I have read both light and heavy stuff this year. I really, really enjoyed "With No One As Witness", by Elizabeth George. She writes mysteries, with a lot of human interaction and a little romance thrown in. I highly recommend any and all of her books. In a lighter vein, I would recommend "Can't Wait to Get to Heaven" by Fannie Flagg. I just never want to give these great people in stories. Right now I am in trashy fiction mode. I am lovin' the Silhouette Desires. I can finish one in one good, long bath!! :3dglasses

My former boss just gave me Charles Frazier's new book, Thirteen Moons. I loved the prose of Cold Mountain (and hated the movie version), so I am looking forward to reading this.

My 2 favorite books this past year:

The Red Tent by Anita Diamant and The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd

Wicked by Gregory Maguire -- excellent book! I'm really looking forward to picking up Son of a Witch, it's sequel.

I'm in the middle of She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb, and it's a great book.
