Re-using Magic Bands?

Ok, I'm thinking about the original question about reusing the bands. Does this mean that if I go to Disney once a year I keep the band and reuse it a year from now? Or are you referring to trips that are close in time?

Say, within a year. I was at WDW for a short stay last week, with a MB, in Jambo. Next month I have a split stay at Kidani and BCV. So for me, actually, it's about 6 weeks apart.

The bands have a 3 year battery life so the expectation is that you will bring them back and re-use them over several years.

Wow, I had not heard that. I wonder how well that will work.

There are actually two chips inside the MagicBand. One is a longer range transmitter that's battery powered. This chip may be used during character interactions (to get your name, if it's your birthday, etc) and read by sensors for traffic flow.

The other chip is powered by the touch points when you put the band against it. This chip is used for most functions of the MagicBand such as: Park entry, room entry, room charging, FP+ entry. Even if the battery powered chip is not longer functional, the non-powered chip will continue to function.

Well, I got an answer to my question when I had to call MS today. She told me that although reusing bands is part of the eventual thought of Disney, for now I should go ahead and order new bands. To further complicate things, I asked her about the fact that our upcoming stay is a split stay, and would I be getting two bands-yes. So during the test, Disney will be supplying me with 3 Magic Bands, 1 in September and now 2 more in October. This is one costly test!

Especially with sending the bands overnight! I wonder if they are having DVC pay for all of this on the DVC stays?
