Can you give me a bit of an explanation in regards to booking vacations in the other collections? Is it a worthwhile thing if you join the DVC or does it end up being costly? I hear people saying DVC is only worthwhile if you want to stay on their properties every year.

Thanks,

Deb

Everyone will tell you that, yes, it is more cost effective to use your points for DVC resorts only.

But it also depends on what you think is worthwhile. Would it make you happier one year to have a holiday somewhere else using your points? If so, that still makes your points good value to you. I've just used a chunk of my points to stay at Disneyland Paris - an obvious choice if we want a Disney fix. It came to 297 points for 3 rooms for 3 nights - the equivalent of 9 nights in total. So, not too bad really. It was something I wanted to do - DDs first trip to Disney, and her aunties and uncles were there to share it. I had so much pleasure just looking forward to it, and we had a great time while we were there.

I will certainly be using points for the Disney Collection again. Another benefit for us is that we have points at two resorts (not been to either of them yet!!) and using them every so often in one of the Collections means I can balance them out. Home resort means nothing once they become "reservation points" so I can use whichever home resort points I wish, or a mixture of both.

I can say that the one Adventurer Collection trip that we looked into was the safari, and it was a decent use of points. Comparing the cash cost of the safari to the amount of points required, we were surprised to find that we were getting almost exactly $10 per point.

We decided against doing the safari (due to DW's bug phobia), and I didn't investigate further. So it's possible that there were deals to be had if you paid cash for the safari.

Still, though, it looks to be a surprisingly even exchange.

I'm part of a minority opinion that alternative use of DVC points is worthwhile. I don't look at it so much in financial terms. To me, my DVC is paid for (aside from dues) and therefore any alternative vacations are just icing on the cake. I'm taking my grandchilren to Hawaii next June, staying at the Kapalua Hotel for 12 nights. This is something I never would have laid out cold cash for, but having already paid for DVC points to use makes it doable. Next year, I'll take the grands to DVC and also try for a Carribbean exchange for my husband. Again, I probably wouldn't do this if I didn't have the points. It's all a matter of using the points to suit your own needs and preferences.
