Our return flight is offering lower fares. So are our departure flights but our times are not available at the reduced rate. Can you just change one leg of a flight to get the cost adjustment or do you need to be able to change both? I'm hoping to be able to take advantage of the $40 savings!

If I remember correctly, you have to change the entire reservation.
You have to cancel and rebook.

Changing is easy:

1) Go to southwest.com and click on "Travel Center" in the blue bar at the top of the page.

2) In the Air section, click the link that says "Change Air Reservation"

3) Enter your confirmation number and credit card holder's name when asked

After this, you will have the opportunity to change both logs of your flight. Just change the one leg that has a lower price (this process works almost exactly like the actual booking engine), and when you are done you will get a screen notifying you of the credit amount you have stored, which will be the difference in price.

The credits are good for travel 1 year from the original booking - not one year from the original flight, but from the day you actually BOOKED the original flight. I had a $60 credit from my MouseFest flights last year that expired on 1-year anniversary of the day I made the original ressie last year, dang it.

It seems to depend a little bit on how the original reservation was booked. I booked a reservation for DD for OCT as a round trip. The return flight has gone down in price. but it won't let me rebook that without cancelling or changing the outbound that has gone up in price. when I tried to cancel just the return, it indicated it would cancel the whole resevation. The lesson I have learned from this is try and book OW all the time. Of course, sometimes the RT fare is lower than the OW.
FWI - other times I have been able to change just one leg without rebooking. I need to pay more attention in the futre to see if I can figure out what decides it. Of course, the other advantage of booking OW is that you could "combine" with a DING fare if each one is done as a separate reservation.

With SWA, it has always been my understanding that if you booked departure and return legs together you had to cancel both segments to rebook. That is what happened to me last December. Fortunately, I was able to get the reduced rate for both legs of the trip. This year when I booked, I did each leg of the trip separately,7 tickets, in order to make it easier to take advantage of reduced fares. Sure enough, I was able to get my return date and flight rebooked at the lower price, but could not get the departure date and flight at the lower price. I was very happy to have banked $210 in my SWA credit account.

Really read all the small print and take your time when rebooking. Hope this helps.

If the flight doesn't change, but you are just trying for the lower fare you have to cancel the entire ressie and rebook. If you change the flight of one of the legs, you can change the ressie.

The booking engine will not see the change if you are just trying to get the same flight, but the lower fare. BTDT

I was able to change our dates twice then change my outgoing flight for myself all Online. Our price went up a little but there was no fees. We did not have to cancel we just used our conf. number to rebook online. It was really easy to do. The only thing we had to call for was to split our res number so I could change my flight to fly out ahead of my DH.
