Hi everyone.
I have 10 older magic bands - not the 1st gen, the ones with the removable puck.
I am wondering if there is a way from home I can deactivate two of them that are on my profile and re-assign them to my two kids? All the families profiles are listed on my account.
I'm wondering if I can do it myself or if I have to do it at the resort when we arrive?

oh no, that's a real bummer :(
Guess I'll have to scour eBay for some old unused ones. I'm not paying for a new one - way out of my price range.

You don’t need magic bands. You can get plastic cards that link to MDE from your resort front desk or guest services at a park. You can also use MDE on your smart phone for both ticket access & to open your resort door.

yes, but we all have the older ones except for one of my kids. I know she won't want to be the only one without one. So it's either find an older style for her or get new ones, I don't want to pay for the new ones. I think they are extremely overpriced.

Just make sure that they are in "new" un-activated status and not "used" or they are just paperweights. I am with @focusondisney about just requesting RF plastic cards.

ETA: spelling..

They could be reassigned, but according to resort managers ‘IT will not do this’. I asked how this fits into Disney’s sustainability save the planet thingy, but I kept getting ‘IT will not do this, unfortunately.’

I wonder how big a pile it would make if we piled up all the old magic bands and old resort mugs?

Sorry but your resort manager story is not quite correct about IT just not wanting to do it. It is a Disney policy just like how physical phone SIM cards can't be reused. There is no process (software) to deactivate a MB and reassign it to another individual in the Disney system. It is just like you can't reassign a ticket once it is used once.

From a pure hardware / software design concept, yes additional code could be written to allow this but it does not exist in the current system.

For what it’s worth, Magic Bands can easily be reassigned at Disneyland.

I’m surprised they don’t have a plain My first visit for children magicband complimentary …ages 3-5 maybe…
They used to be free for all resort guests just like the free Disney Magical Express bus from the Airport. I am not sure why a child 3-5 needs a MB for anything. Most will not wear one for more than 10 minutes. I have been there done that.

An alternative is to go to the Disney Character Warehouse on Vineland or International. You can usually get one for $19.99. Styles and inventory are limited, but it is a way to get a brand new magic band without breaking the bank. Some of these are even magicband plus.

I gave you direct quotes from the resort manager. It is not a made up story.

Your reply confirms they are correct. Code could be written but IT won’t.

A used ticket doesn’t take up space in a landfill like a used Magic band.

I never indicated your story was made up. Just the information provided by the resort manager was not quite correct concerning the quote "IT will not do this".

IT does not decide what code they write or don't write. IT gets a set of requirements, they provide a sizing for the scope of the request and then management decides the priority of the request or decides that it is not in scope and will not be done.

Exactly this. Allowing Magic Bands to be re-assigned would be very easy from a technical standpoint. It is not allowed because a business decision was made at some point to not allow it. Probably to prevent people from sharing bands so people have to buy them.

Ahh for more than 8 years (until August 16th 2021), Magic Bands were free to on-site guests and the system never allowed this MB reassignment even when they were free. This function was not part of the original Magic Band ecosystem or added since then.

My eldest was 18 months on her first visit and loved wearing it, we went back when she was 3 and she wouldn't even take it off to go to sleep. All kids are different.

Yes, this is an idea. We always go there anyway, not sure why I didn't just think of that!
