RCI/DVC exchange- do you need a guest certificate?

My mother gave my brother and his wife a week to exchange. They traded for Wilderness Lodge. Do they need a guest certificate in order to check in? I'm pretty sure the reservation is in their names because they signed up for Magical Express. I told my sil to call to check.

It depends on who you ask. If you ask RCI, they will say yes. What I'd do would be to call DVC's exchange department and give them the straight story. Ask if they can add their names to the reservation and be able to check in even if your mother (I assume it's in her name) is not present. I've done this many times with DVC and elsewhere and never been unsuccessful. Of course there's a risk involved when you do it because the RCI member remains responsible for any charges or damages which would seem to be a very low risk situation as described. I only do this for close family/friends. Not directly related to your situation but just for informational purposes, renting the exchange to someone else is against RCI's rules.

Thanks Dean. My sil said she has a guest certificate so they're all set. I thought I had read that if other people were listed on the reservation they could check in.

You are welcome. Remind them about the extra $95 fee payable at check in (they'll charge it to the card if you check in online with a CC). They can get the DVC reservation # from DVC, make dining reservation with DVC and put in any requests. What I don't know is how the DDP changes will affect exchange options. I'm hopeful that there will be the option to get some days and not others for an exchange but won't be surprised if the option is not available.
