Just read this while checking out that hilarious thread mentioned by Wovenwonder....

One of the immediate impressions we got on Brilliance of the Seas was an imitation of a cash register ringing in our ear: K’ching. Royal Caribbean seems to be moving ever further into “a’la carte territory” and by this we mean beyond the usual stuff for which you’re prepared to spend money, like shore excursions, spa services, and casino gaming. In this case, be prepared to pay $10 to take Pathway to Yoga at the fitness center, 99 cents-and-up to buy a pastry from Latte-tudes, $9.95 to watch relatively recent-run movies on RCTV, and a $20 service fee to eat in the ship’s alternative restaurants.

Ouch!!! :( All of these little K'chings could really add up! I wonder if a RCCL cruise ends up being that much cheaper than DCL after all????

I don't think it is much different than any other ship. Most have special alternative dining that cost extra. And I believe all charge for 'spa services'. Even RCCL has many, many activities during the day that are no cost. The in room movies are in addition to the movie theatre's that are not at a charge. I think its just like any ship ---- you can enjoy yourself and never spend a penny once on board or you can splurge and enjoy the extra's.
:D

$15-$20 is about the industry standard for alternative restaurants. Palo is relatively inexpensive in comparison. I'm actually surprised that they have not increased the surcharge, as I'm sure people would pay it (witness DCL's cruise rates themselves).

In the end, though, it probably costs about the same, as people on DCL tend to embellish the $5 commensurate with what the meal might cost on land. If the price going in is $15 instead of $5, my guess is that the supplemental tip would be proportionally smaller.

Hey Wovenwonder Enjoyed your site , great pictures of the Magic. We were on the Wonder in February & can't wait to go back in Feb. 2004. Some day I'll figure out how to post our cruise pictures! Have a great cruise in 2004.!!:Pinkbounc
