Raya - theater vs disney plus

Not necessarily. Just because of streaming services, it doesn't necessarily mean that the production values should degrade significantly, particularly since there's already been successes on services like Netflix, which is already proving to be an excellent challenger to the dominance of the Big 5 and pre streaming-era mini majors. In fact, one can argue that Netflix is already becoming a mini major in itself.

Netflix is also substantially more expensive than Disney and many other streaming services Sure you can get it for $9 but that’s the non-HD version. I’m sure the majority fall onto the $14 HD plan or the $18 4K plan.

Has it made back its production cost yet?

I'm wondering if there's the possibility of a follow-up to the film, either a sequel or a series of some kind. I'm still waiting with high anticipation for Zootopia 2.

Nowhere close. The rumor is that the quick pivot to full theatrical for Black Widow in May, even though Raya has no trailer for BW in its theatrical release, was an indication of how not well the hybrid release went on opening weekend worldwide.

Black Widow might perform questionably too just because of Covid. Even with the vaccine being distributed and masks/social distancing guidelines in place, people just might not feel safe enough to go to a public theatre, being around other people. That will affect sales, I predict.

Oh, I 100% agree...but that tells you how catastrophic the Raya release really was overall - they are willing to take subpar theatrical to not redo what obviously didn't work...

Some aspects of the movie feel rushed overall. I liked it for the most part, but I feel like Disney would have been better served to push this one back a bit further, not just to flesh out the world and its lore a bit more, but to wait for a better opportunity to bring in sales when Covid is no longer such a big obstacle.

Alas, I have my sights set on two Disney projects now: Robin Hood, and Zootopia 2.
