you have to hold the alt key down while you are moving the exposure or black slider. as soon as you press the alt and exposure slider triangle you'll see the whole photo go black with just the really bright areas colored.(.you can still see your actual photo in the navigation photo window. top left corner )..you can move the slider till the whole thing is black then just slightly move it back again just before whatever color there is starts to comes back, watching in the navigation photo as well. ( same with the black except the photo turns white) usually when you see the histogram then for the photo it shouldn't be bunched peaks at the edge but should have a little "toe" sticking out of either side of the last mark on either side of the histogram.
duey doo dah is right, if you got rid of a really bright glare the whole thing would be black ,lol, but you can see once the photo goes black where the light points are and if they are something that you may not want to /can't fix..and nice thing...if you don't like it hit the redo and try again!
