RAW file format

you have to hold the alt key down while you are moving the exposure or black slider. as soon as you press the alt and exposure slider triangle you'll see the whole photo go black with just the really bright areas colored.(.you can still see your actual photo in the navigation photo window. top left corner )..you can move the slider till the whole thing is black then just slightly move it back again just before whatever color there is starts to comes back, watching in the navigation photo as well. ( same with the black except the photo turns white) usually when you see the histogram then for the photo it shouldn't be bunched peaks at the edge but should have a little "toe" sticking out of either side of the last mark on either side of the histogram.
duey doo dah is right, if you got rid of a really bright glare the whole thing would be black ,lol, but you can see once the photo goes black where the light points are and if they are something that you may not want to /can't fix..and nice thing...if you don't like it hit the redo and try again!

Here is the link to the update for anyone interested.

Nikon RAW Codec
NEF Codec Download
NEF Codec is a module that makes Nikon RAW (.NEF) image files as easy to work with as JPEG and TIFF images.

Ver.1.4.0 changes
Supports NEF (RAW) images taken with the D700.
Reflects the effects of optional Picture Controls.
Reflects the effects ISO sensitivity settings below ISO 200 (LO 0.3–LO 1.0).
Reflects the effects of the TN-A2 NEF (RAW) color filter in Capture NX.

Well, it's definitely only for 32-bit Vista/XP as it states. It works on my wife's 32-bit Vista Ultimate machine but on my 64-bit pc, still......no dice Chicago.

No worries though, as I've long since adapted and don't need Windows file browsers to control my world.

I did a little more searching and have actually found a Vista 64 bit NEF codec that definitely works after just installing the beta. The only drawback is that it's a trial beta and requires a purchase of about $30 when the period expires. Seems silly to have to pay for this though. Even sillier is that Nikon and Microsoft can't seem to get their 64 bit butts together. Nonetheless, here's the link for anyone who might want to try it out.

I downloaded this three days ago, and still can't get it to work . I've been driving myself nuts trying to figure out what the problem is. Any clues?

for the longest time i couldn't find the undo history but it's way on the bottom left scroll in develop module, under the presets
Okay, I found this but the only option seems to be 'clear all' rather then being able to undo the last thing you did. Is my only option to go to edit and undo from there or am still missing something?

What operating system are you using?

And have you got the latest updates installed like if its XP do you have service pack 2 installed?

* I know service pack 3 is out but I have heard some folks having issues with #3 that is why I said #2

FWIW, MS has codecs for all DSLRs available for d/l from their own page. Unfortunately, the nomenclature is very inconsistent on what supports 64-bit. The ones ones that clearly support 64-bit Vista are Olympus and ArdFly - whoever they are, but they use DNG so presumably anything that uses DNG should be supported with that.

dr zero: I'm a computer idiot. I'm using Windows XP, but I have no idea where I'd find the service pack.

Np! just click start and navigate to the control panel and when you get there click on the system Icon and it should come up and tell you the run down on your system. :thumbsup2

Even easier than that, right-click on My Computer then click on Properties. Takes you to the same place.

FWIW, the Windows Photo Gallery that is mentioned here is a Vista feature, not part of XP. Still, the codecs usually work on both XP and Vista.

Well that is no fun! Here is a link that will let you add it to XP

Having skipped XP and went from Windows 2000 to Vista there is still that learning curve when it comes to XP thanks Groucho!

OK; I'm back! LOL--I have service pack 3 installed. I also installed a Photoshop elements plug in update, but still nada....
I seem to be having trouble extracting files from the Adobe update

Finally got up the nerve to try shooting RAW - and had a really great time.

Of course, editing was a whole other matter. :lmao:

I have plenty of questions but I'll save them for another day. Right now I'm just happy to have gotten these 4 pictures up here.

Very windy here as you can tell from flags, a little blurry on the right, not sure the WB is correct.

This might have come out better if I could have figured out how to focus to infinity, but I couldn't remember and was getting bitten by mosquitos and sand fleas. I liked it anyway. (Was amazed at the number of people taking pictures of this beautiful moon using flash.)

EXIF Data

Olympus E-510, no flash, used tripod

1) ISO400, 53mm, f11, 13 seconds*, Man WB, Spot

2) ISO400. 40mm, f11, 15 seconds*, Man WB, Spot

3) ISO200, 48mm, f11, 30 seconds*, Man WB, Spot

4) ISO1600, 150mm, f5.6, 2.5 seconds, Man WB, Spot

*Not sure if this reflected the fact that I used the 12 second timer. (Note to self: pick up that remote shutter release you've been meaning to get - sooner than later.)

Feedback is welcome, especially on tweaking settings.

Looks like a little bit of camera chake, not sure if your camera has a shutter delay, but nikons you can delay the shutter by .4 sec or so so you do not get any shake from the camera mirror.
I like the third one best.

What are you using to process the RAW files? I'm currently using the Olympus Master program then finishing up in Paint Shop Pro since PSP doesn't currently support the E510 RAW files.

Yes, Olympus Master. What do you mean "finish up"? Was there a step I'm missing? I noticed that after editing, the pics were converted to JPEG. How did I manage that? :rotfl2:

Maybe someone can answer this too: why did my images look crystal clear in my LCD screen (after taking them) and also when first pulled up on the edit screen, and then they appeared to become noisy, as in, to the extreme? Does this always happen when shooting RAW?
