I have always heard how bad it is to eat raw eggs or anything with raw eggs in it, but I never exactly knew why. I think it has something to do with bacteria, but am not sure. I do know that for years and years as kids and as an adult we have eaten raw cookie dough and have never gotten sick, but now I find myself denying my DS this great pleasure. So I guess I really need to know if I really need to deny him this pleasure and why.

Does anyone know?

I don't know why, but I think it's a bunch of hooey. I have consumed MASSIVE amounts of cookie dough, cake batter, etc. in my life and was never once affected. Don't body builders drink raw eggs?

Nope, not a good idea. raw eggs carry salmonella.

DS, at age 1 got it from undercook eggs at Disney and was very sick for 3 weeks and his digestive system was messed up for 8 months. It can kill the very old and very young.

It wasn't as prevalent when we were kids, but it is a problem these days.

It is said that raw eggs can carry salmonella....which can make you very sick (especially children and the elderly). But I still eat cookie dough, and I like my eggs over easy and I let my kids eat those things too. We ate those things as kids and NEVER got sick- I think the risk is small. I better be careful or I'll be arrested like the woman whose kids had a sunburn!

I admit, I still lick the spoon and the bowl when I make a cake or brownies! Will I let my kids do it, when I have them? I don't know. Probably not. It's too dangerous, plus that would mean that I would have to share! ;)

We always have this argument with the kids when I bake. They want to lick, I say no. Sometimes they will sneak a finger! Of course I lick, how can you not!! I try to sneak it, then they yell and say Hey why are you allowed. I say - Because I'm an adult I can make that choice, however if you get sick I don't want to have to tell the doctor I let you eat cake batter.

The reason you didn't get sick as kid was because before, salmonella couldn't get through an egg's shell. But then salmonella mutated and found a way to get inside the egg. This has been recent, in the late 80's, I think.

There's always the chance that you have had salmonella (since the mid-80's) and didn't know it. Most of the time, a healthy, non-elderly adult won't get very sick. You may have a few symptoms or none at all. But if you were to feed raw eggs to a young child or elderly person, or if you ate them while you were sick with something else and your immune system was down, you could end up very sick.

There are eggs at the grocery store that are pastuerized in the shell. They don't cook any differently than regular eggs. If you want to eat raw or undercooked eggs, they're worth the money. (They're about $2/dozen at my grocery store.) I've been buying them since I got pregnant just to be on the safe side. You never know if the yolk is going to be a little too runny.

I'm with mermaid...we'll be sharing a jail cell..

My kids and I both eat and LOVE raw cookie dough. They lick the spoon and the bowl from my cakes...

You can also use Egg Beaters (or store equivalent) if you're worried about salmonella... they're ultra pastuerized.

and also editor of Gourmet magazine, the true risk is minimal. The very young, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems or other serious health issues should avoid raw eggs. For others the risk is minimal. Make sure your eggs are fresh. There is no guarantee, however most people will not develop an illness.
I let my kids lick the bowl and beaters. They have never gotten sick.

In the Atlanta area they sell Davison's Eggs. They are about $1.68 a dozen and are pasturized. You could eat them raw if you wanted to. They look and taste just like a regular egg except when you first crack them open the white is a little milky looking. Not as transparent as a regular egg.

DS loves eggs over medium. I've been using these for almost 2 years now and don't buy any other eggs. We've used them in everything from Toll House Cookies to eggnog. I get them at both Kroger and Publix.

The risk for salmonella may be minimal but I have experienced first hand and I don't want to go through that again. I expecially do not want to have my kids get sick when there is an alternative

I eat cookie dough, but I don't let my kids. When they get older and weigh more, I'll let them. But I figure at < 60 lbs, a little bit of bacteria can go a long way.

I remember trying to 'emulate' those body builders as a kid and ate some raw eggs. Nasty!!! Don't think I'll try that again. LOL!!! :)
