yes they really are my rats (ok my DD but who takes care of them do you think??) and yes the harness stays on when they are out of the cage and walking around. If they are riding on my shoulder then they don't need the harness at all.

No bubonic plague in my house!

my girlfriend had pet rats. i used to hold them, pet them, and, egad....give them kisses! would never do that now, though.

Oops, I guess that I mispelled it! I was hoping that I really wouldn't have to explain what bubonic plague was.

Kinlaw, Is it similar to owning a hamster? Are they any smarter than other rodents? Would it run away without the harness? An interesting choice for a pet!

They smell better than hampster (except for sixcats's grandvermin ) They can be trained to do tricks...The are ALWAYS cleaning and grooming themselves and they eat almost anything.

Although we feed them a rat mix from the petstore and Yoggies...rat candy LOL

It doesn't run away when the harness is off but it does get into some prediciments and around wires when it is roaming. So I don't let it do that at all anymore. The harness doesn't go around his neck either so it cant be choked by it...

They can be trained to do tricks...well thats really cool! I didn't realize that they made rat pet mix, lol!

I've had some strange pets too. I think that someone should start an' unusual pets' thread to see what else everyone has. Very interesting!

Guess I was a bit of a tomboy. We would catch nightcrawlers too and keep them as pets.

Bubonic plague - not such a big deal since the discovery of antibiotics. Rats are intelligent and lots of fun.
