I woke up this morning with a rash on my stomach that traced to my back. It looks like chicken pox, but was localized and didn't itch, burn or hurt. Since I had CP when I was in 4th grade, I knew that it wasn't that, but thought about shingles. The rash doesn't match the ones I've found online.

Well, by dinner, they have spread to my chest and upper back. They itch now. I figured that since I started taking ginko biloba on Friday night that it was probably an allergic reaction.

So, I won't take it anymore. No biggie.

Then, DD takes a shower and they are starting on her stomach, too.

So, I guess in the morning, I'll be calling our doctors to find out how to get rid of whatever this is. I hope DH and DS don't get it, too.

My first thought was shingles as well. The way you described the localization from the stomach to the back seems like a textbook case. And it could spread to your daughter, as shingles can manifest themselves as CP in children.

I would wash your sheets and avoid skin to skin contact. And I wouldn't just call your doctor, I'd go in and see him.

I would definetly contact your doctor. The fact that it's spreading to other family members means more than an allergic reaction. Good luck!

My appointment is for 10:00 this morning. DD's dr didn't seem overly concerned. Told me to give her benedryl, tylenol if she starts a fever and Aveeno baths. Said I should call if my dr thinks it's something more.

PD, if I had a digital camera, you'd be the first person I'd send the pics to.

My DD had something similar and thought for sure it was shingles.

When the dr squeezed the stomach skin gently together, it formed a christmas tree branch pattern.

She showed me in her dermatology book that it was a case of "pityriasis rosea". It was caused by a virus, never making her sick or anything and spreading to her back. All we could do was wait it out and it went away after a few weeks.

Hope it's not the shingles!

I'm 37 yo and I have the chicken pox. I'm itchy and tired from the benedryl I've been taking to control the itching. My DD has it, too. I guess it's only a matter of time until DS gets it, too.

The thing is, I had it when I was 10. The doctor said it must have been a mild case that didn't build up enough immunity to the disease.

So, I guess my diagnosis was right. The only rash that I found online that resembled mine was chicken pox. I only wished that it wasn't true.

Be careful! Chicken pox can be nasty in adults. I am also one of the lucky few who has had it twice. The only place I would scratch was my scalp- I didn't care if I got scars there ;) Just being able to itch SOMEPLACE made me feel so much better.
