Rash guards

Hi all! We don't typically buy rashguards or SPF shirts for DD. Is there a specific reason we'd want one on a cruise? (For reference, we sail from Galveston in December.)

The sun can burn and cause damage even in December. If you'll be snorkeling anywhere, it saves the worry of if you've been out long enough to need to reapply while you're still in the water. Face mask problems and a longer than anticipated time snorkeling got my son his very first sunburn. Got dh, too, and he rarely burns.

Especially on beach areas, like CC, the reflection from the water adds intensity to the amount of sun you're getting. Sunscreen works, but the rash guard provides even more protection.

My kids are Scandinavian. Water rinses off lotion. Rash guards do not rinse.

All of these, plus a couple more. My sons are teenagers and getting them to put sunscreen on arms, legs and neck/face is hard enough. Trying to get them to put it on chest and back? Forget it. Cost a fortune in sunscreen too.

The swim shirts they have these days are stylish, brightly colored, and dry quickly. We got them ones in fairly unusual colors for our cruise and thus, I could spot them in the water or on the beach any time. Not that they need me keeping an eye on them so much, but it was nice for me to be able to spot them. Also came in handy when we were snorkeling. I can't see without my glasses very well, but I could find them by looking for blurs of the right color.

Our whole family ALWAYS wears rash guards.

Adults need sun protection just as much as as the kids do.
This way I hope we're setting them up for good habits for life.

(My little guy's 2nd grade teacher was just diagnosed with Stage 4 melanoma as a 40-something. Skin cancer is not something I wish to mess around with.)

I suspect a decade from now rash guards will be as common as bike helmets.

Now, if I could only get my little red-headed child to wear a hat while swimming!

I was able to get a white one with the DCL Logo in the shop on the 11th floor this past August on the Dream. Small caveat--runs LARGE! But I will take it along in December along with my very fashionable DCL cover-up!

I have a rash guard shirt I bought onboard either the Magic or Wonder (i've forgotten which). they had white and blue ones with the DCL logo on the front. I think I got it from the deck 9 kiosk. Kids and adult sizes. And I still use it as it protects me better than just sunscreen. Probably would be cheaper getting it online tho.

As others said- LLBean, Lands End. You can try Sierra Trading Post, which has name brands, on-line, for cheap. We live in ours. Great protection from sun, added warmth if needed. Super for snorkeling

Tips for putting on sunscreen. Put the first layer on in the morning before you leave your cabin and before you put on your swim suit. I do two layers. The first with the spray and the second with lotion. For sunscreen to be effective it needs to be on 30 minuets before exposure.
For the face I like the stick kind (Bullfrog). It doesn’t run in the eyes like the lotion does when the kids get wet or sweaty.
Reapply often especially under the eyes. The kids wipe their eyes often and wipe off the sunscreen.

Athleta.com has some great rash guards. I have used the Pacifica UPF tops for years and LOVE them... and they have some on sale now :)

Not great for boys... But good for adult females. :)

We fry like eggs on a hot sidewalk in the sun so that's mainly why we wear them. And especially if you're swimming, or worse snorkeling, it's easy to burn quick and difficult to fully protect your back with sunscreen. We did find a side benefit last year to them - coming out of the water on deck with the wind, it's really cold. The shirt gives you a bit more warmth and protection from that and because they dry fast, it's comfortable to keep on after you're out of the water but still sitting out by the pool or on the beach (also keeps you warmer when standing in line on the stairs for the AquaDuck). Afterwards we also went to WDW and one day it was kind of chilly but we wanted to go into the pool. No way would I have done that without my swim shirt. It helps to keep you warmer in the water and the portion of your upper body that's out of the water once the rest of you is used to it is also protected from the cold so you don't have to keep ducking your shoulders under water to stop shivering.

I thought they were such a good idea, that I bought additional shirts plus capri-length swim pants for our trip to Aulani. I figured if I was going to be spending any time in the lazy river, covering up was a good idea.

I recommended them to a friend of mine who is overweight and trying to lose weight partly by swimming. She's very self-conscious of being in a bathing suit. So she bought the pants and a looser fitting swim shirt and just loves them. I'm not sure she'd go if she had to wear a bathing suit but she now goes every day and has started seeing results. She also finds that the chlorine in the pool doesn't bother her skin as much when she's wearing them (not sure I quite get that - you still get completely wet but if it works for her...).
