Rare diseases - DAS?

My daughter can't be exposed to sunlight, so during out upcoming trip I'm worried about the times waiting in line in the sun. I can remember some rides like Matterhorn, Dumbo, Peter Pan, Storybook Canal Boats, and more that would require her to stand in the sun.

She wears a special hood, gloves, and long sleeves to cover all her skin, but standing a long time in the sun is unbearable. We'll manage it well ourselves most of the time, but it would be really helpful for her not to have to stand in those lines.

Do you think DL would allow her to get a DAS? Any tips?

you just have to go to GR and tell them what she needs while waiting in line and talk to them about her needs

1 they will say yes or no

2 if they say no then you can ask to speak to a manager and see what they say or you can try why they recommend and try why they say and if it dose not work you are more then welcome to go back to GR and talk to them again

The DAS is not based on diagnosis. You will have to state why you need to be able to wait elsewhere and then they will determine if something else such as a mobility device would be a suitable accommodation. Since even some FP lines are in the sun and they can't guarantee you the ability to wait indoors be prepared to have a wheelchair with an umbrella or stroller(tagged with stroller as wheelchair tag) with a hood as an option. One thing I distinctly remember about DL and DCA was how hard it was to actually get out of the heat.

Can you schedule your trip during the times they have later (evening) hours? I can't stay out in the sun (skin cancer diagnosis multiple times) so we go in August - parks stay open later, so we go early in the morning, break, then when the sun is setting. This is at WDW, though, not sure how it works at DL.

The DAS is not based on diagnosis. You will have to stay why you need to be able to wait elsewhere and then they will determine if something else such as a mobility device would be a suitable accommodation. I am not sure where you are but Disney world dose have more inside lines that may be better for her ( some are still out doors) I would see if you can get a stroller as a wheel chair tag for her where she can sit ( with a protective over on it to keep the sun light/ UV out) ( I know someone a few years a go that had a daughter that could not go out in sun light or UV as just a little was very daugurse to here) they would go to Disney world and get a stroller as a wheel chair they had a special cover for it and when ever she left the stroller she had to wear special clothing to keep UV sun form getting to her. they would go to the park early and then go back to there room and come back late at night ( after the sun goes down)

We do plan to stay out of the heat during the hottest parts of the day, but I'd also like Disneyland to offer a DAS so she can enjoy the park the same as everyone else without having to miss a big chunk of the day.

Can your daughter go out at night without having to be covered from head to toe? If so, take her to Disney in the evening until the park closes. Not only is it cooler, but after 9:00 or so the crowds start to thin out. This might also be a magical time for her to experience the outdoors without all the preparation and worries that usually occur. And with all the lights, Disney has a special beauty at night. A lot of the lines at DL are outdoors, even the fast pass ones, so even with the DAS she is still going to have to be out in the sun and sometimes the FP lines can be really long. Have you thought about getting her a wheelchair and then getting an umbrella that she can hold over the wheelchair to keep herself shaded?

I would ask for the das. Yes, there will still be times she has to wait in the sun, but likely not as long as without das. Plus, if she is overheated or not doing well from all the sun, she can get a das time then go rest at first aid or the hotel, and not have to worry about a time window like with fast pass. I do caution you, make sure you come up with a good touring plan using the das before you go. Without a good touring plan, using das can make you end up crisscrossing and backtracking a lot,and cause you to spend more time in the sun in between rides. Can she wear a cooling vest to help with the heat of all the extra clothes? ,might help. Good luck!

If she can tolerate early morning sun, and late afternoon sun, then I would plan on taking a mid-day break at the hotel.

If your travel plans don't allow for that, then I would equip her with a couple of these: Battery operated lipstick fan WDW is now selling these all over the parks; I don't know if DL is. I have 2 of them that I purchased from this link that I carry in my purse (I dress very similarly to your daughter when in full sun) and just that little breeze makes a huge difference in my comfort level. Pro tip: the water mister fans work great at DL - but at WDW, often it is so humid that they don't really help as much as just make you feel "damper" than you already were. With the lipstick fans, you may have to gently "shape" the soft plastic blades when you open them, but mine push out a surprising volume of air.

I am "fortunate" that early in the morning, and later in the afternoon/evening, I can go out without full gear. If she can tolerate it, would an umbrella allow her to move about without the hood? That alone might make her so much more comfortable. I know that I have to be careful about "reflected" UV; even in my house I can "catch" enough UV bouncing around the rooms that we have to cover windows/doors.

When you get to Guest Relations, just remember: The DAS discussion will be about how the DAS can help her, not what her diagnosis is.

While not at DL, right after the GAC/DAS switch, I spoke to a cast member about staying out of the sun.

My doctor specifically told me to stay out of the sun as much as possible while at WDW. And to try to not get overheated.

I was told that most lines are inside and that DAS wouldn't help. Obviously DL lines are different, but from what I remember, most are indoors.

It won't hurt to ask. But as is the standard answer to DAS questions, be prepared to have them say no.

Since Disneyland is not using FP+, just the older FP system, the OP can't book 3 FP ahead of time, sadly. That would have helped as they could have picked 3 attractions with outside queues right away. What the OP can do is get the first FP for an attraction like Dumbo, and have a list of attractions with outside queues to FP all day, with or without a DAS. The DAS is only going to get them into one attraction every few hours as it is (depending on wait times, of course), so using FP wisely will make a big difference, IMO.

You will not have a problem. I have zero heat tolerance due to my illness and due to one of my meds I burn..easily. At Epcot I am fine, alot of places to get out of the heat, most ride lines are indoor (i am in a wheelchair) so I have never had to use my DAS at Epcot

MK on the other hand OYE, so many ride lines out in the heat! Since I am an AP I have only had to explain why I need a DAS once, now I just go in and re-new , the first time I just went in and told them why I cant stay in line.

I have to stay out of the sun due to medical problems too and was told by a CM. That this was not something I could use a DAS card for I do have other need that I was able to get a DAS card for but this was about 6 months after the change.
