My guess would be that since most people either get them with the dinning plan now or pay for them on there KTTW card they should be able to get the info from that to encode onto the RFID on the cup.

Well another interesting tidbit in that article is that the mugs are now $17.99 for length of stay. That's quite an increase.

But now they come with chips! Yum, who doesn't like chips?

Oh, wait...

I do wish they would make them reprogrammable for future visits. That would be a much greener solution, and they could offer a discount for future visits.

Sure there is a price increase on the high end, but if you are staying on a shorter stay, or maybe only want the refillable mug for 1 day (maybe the day you spend at the resort instead of the parks) it's cheaper.
$8.99 for 1 day
$11.99 for 2 days
$14.99 for 3 days
$17.99 for length of stay (4+ days)

Never found the refillable mugs to be worth it for us - even at the old cheaper rate. The mugs weren't that big and by the time we got back to the room from where the dispenser was we had already drank it all. Perhaps they are better for those that just use them around their resort pool.

Despite all the other downfalls with this idea, not being able to microwave it is a no go for me. I cannot tell you how many times I have filled mine with coffee or hot chocolate and gone back to room. By the time I get my kids showered and in bed my drink is need of some heat!! Granted the coffee isn't great anyway...but when you are addicted to it, ya take what can get :) I have nuked water in for tea as well. (yeah nuking plastic never good but when ya need to...) Oh well, as anything else, if you don't like it....don't buy it. No reason to be that disappointed! Just means I should go ahead and store a mini Keurig in my awesome Purple Locker so I can always have a fresh cup ;)

Happy Disney Monday all :)

Get a hydroflask, then after dispensing the coffee into the refillable mug, pour it in to the hydroflask... :)

I hear there are some great DIS hydroflasks :)

Agree. If they are free with the DDP fine, we'll use them. But to break even on 4x17.99 on soda probably wouldn't happen for us. We don't fill them that often as I don't want any of us drinking that much soda. I did use them for coffee but I'll go with the in room coffee makers and order a case of water. That's a better solution for us.

This makes me wonder if they (Disney) will implement a time period between refills. I believe there was one during the test period at All Star Sports.

Yes, I heard there was a 5 minute lockout. And this is apparently using the same tech.

There was. I was there during the testing in 2011. It wasn't really a big deal, because we almost never drank something that fast that we needed a refill within five minutes. It only happened to my sister once-a little message popped up saying that it could be refilled in X number of minutes.

We get ours with the dining plan...and for us, it works out well....but that is a big price increase....having to buy it outright would not be a good deal for us.

I am just annoyed that they don't seem to be changing the design. The one they show is the same one as when I went in 2011! A new design is more likely to get me to buy a new one, than anything else, lol. We'll see when I go this Oct.

I wouldn't take the image they have as being the design...I haven't seen an actual image of the design yet, but I'm hearing that they are the same shape and size (disappointing - I was hoping they'd at least make it 20oz), with Mickey's face as the - or at least one of the designs, on a red background.

I read on touring plans blog earlier that they will be able to be used at all resorts regardless of where they were bought. http://blog.touringplans.com/2013/0...able-mug-system-coming-for-walt-disney-world/

According to a few reliable sites, including wdwmagic.com, a brand new version (called Rapid Fill) of the ever popular refillable mug system is expected to be rolled out starting this month. Over the next few weeks at all Walt Disney World Resort hotels, the changeover will take place with the introduction of new mugs that are equipped with a Radio Frequency Identification chip (otherwise known as RFID).
The new mugs will be activated for a specific number of days: either one, two, or three days OR for the length of stay (which is good for 14 days; if your trip is longer, you can purchase more days for the mug). Guests can check to see how many days remain via the beverage dispenser’s LCD screen. Once the purchase period is over, the mugs will be deactivated and cannot be used on subsequent visits. These mugs will be allowed to be used at any resort’s beverage station, regardless of where it was purchased, during the mug’s “life.”
All guests can purchase a mug, even those who are not staying on property. Once the mug is activated at a beverage station, that will start the first day. The day ends at 11:59 pm, no matter what time you first activated said mug.
The price for the mugs will vary based off the number of days that are purchased.
$8.99 for 1 day
$11.99 for 2 days
$14.99 for 3 days
$17.99 for length of stay (4 or more days)
The refillable mugs will still also be included in some Disney Dining Plans. Past mugs may not be reused.
These mugs are set to roll out starting at the All-Star Resorts, then to the rest of the resorts subsequently.
This has not officially been announced by Disney yet, so some details may change.
