Rapid Antigen testing options in the U.S.

I would book a Walgreens Rapid ID Now test for the minute you think you could get there. Results in a couple hours max in our experience.
That’s my plan if testing is still in place in June as I have tickets for me and my daughter to see John Mulaney in Buffalo.
I hope against hope the testing requirement will be gone by then. Also, let’s face the reality - if you drive across straight to a test, and that comes in positive, that is clearly not due to travel. And regardless of RATs being an option, day trips are simply not workable for most people. Another summer with these mandates will probably be the death knell for border towns that rely on tourism.

So, what happens if one of us ‘did’ test positive ?

Well, if you test positive - even on a trip planned for an afternoon - as per the order you are expected to NOT come back to Canada and to isolate for 10 days outside the country. Ignoring that and crossing back anyway is possible as legal residents cannot be denied entry but you do expose yourself to fines of $5000 plus surcharges.
Expect someone to reply that the fines are never imposed and they know of several people who came back positive with no issues as they had a quarantine plan in place and explained that to the border guard. That’s awesome but it doesn’t change the fact that the law directs you to not cross and the fines are still a possibility.
