rant!

FTR, I implied no such thing. I implied that the OP had made an arbitrarily rash statement about the abilities of the elderly which would be like me making a rash statement about the abilities of poor writers.

It is an analogy. One of those things no longer tested, because african americans did better on them than the causcasians...

I didn't get the analogy until you pointed out later why you attacked the OP's spelling and grammar.

What's this about analogies anyway? I know they're not on our state tests, but my kids have had to do them in school. And they still are on some tests (SATs? not sure. I think it was on the GRE, though).

We still do tons, too. But they took them off of the SAT's. They were one of the areas that kids that were statistically not doing as well, including the african american urban kiddos, were out preforming others.

So, yes, it is the school's fault.

I only half agree with you.

Sure, it's the school's responsibility to teach grammar and spelling. But, it's also the responsibility of the individual to LEARN grammar and spelling.

And, if the school is lacking, then the individual should take it upon him or herself to learn it. My "formal" education was nothing more than graduating from public high-school. However, my "informal" education never ends. I'm constantly reading, learning, and bettering myself. "Formal" education should be a foundation for learning, not the entire structure.

We are all constantly judged by how we look, how we act, and how we communicate. It's unfortunate, but it's true.

With the exception of those with real learning disabilities, if you choose ignorance instead of education, you're going to be labeled that way.

However, if *sometimes* you use capital letters to begin a sentence, and other times you don't, or if *sometimes* you capitilize "I" and other times you don't, or if *sometimes* you attempt to separate your thoughts into paragraphs and other times you ramble in one long run-on sentence, or if *sometimes* you put an apostrophe in a contraction and other times you don't - I would presume you know what is correct and you are just being lazy.

Its like saying if you dont know what 6.022 x 10 ^ 23 is then you cant possibly be smart

That may or may not be true, but complex mathematical formulas rarely come up in everyday conversation. Your grammar, both in writing and speech, is used to communcate. You may be a genius in other things, but if you speak or write improperly, unfortunately, that's how you will be judged. In normal, everyday communcation, people don't typically learn about your musical or math skills. But, they WILL have the opportunity to know your communication skills.

No one said learning and using proper grammar is easy. It's a skill. But, it's a skill you have to learn and work at. I'm sure you didn't just pick up your musical instrument one day and play. You worked hard and practiced. You have to do the same thing with grammar.

I agree with you that it is not the school's fault. They do their best to teach us but if we dont decide to learn what they are teaching us then they cant force it upon us. I do work very hard at spelling and grammar but it is my weakness in writing, I believe i have wonderful writing composition and a good writing style but when it comes to grammar and spelling it just seems like it is something that has never really nor ever will really click im my mind. Now i realize you are saying communication is what people are going to judge you on, but I don't write to friends or aquaintances very often and if I do i would be sure to check my spelling, grammar ect. I have great communication with people by talking.. and trust me im good at that :teeth:
I guess I dont really know about the great impression of great grammar and spelling.. I never have been in a situation where people have judged me in this way. Most of my friends are from the band and we all share the one link that ties us all together in some way, we are all in this music and marching together.. But now that im starting to think about this I suppose if i related this subject to music I can see that sometimes although I do not believe it is right people judge other people on how well they can play their instrument. So, I suppose in a way I see your point but then in a way i do not agree with it. Some people judge and some people do not, and isn't their an analogy that says dont judge a book by its cover? You may not be the best speller or in the case i was speak about musically talented.. but you may still be a wonderful and very intelligant person.

If it's not your fault, then whose fault is it?

I am not familiar with the posts and threads to which you are referring, so please don't take this personally.

I have never corrected someone's bad grammar or improper spelling on the DIS. I do believe wholeheartedly that using proper grammer is very important. Right or wrong, the way one communicates creates a perception about that individual's education and intelligence. This is not a personal slam, but a generalization of how people think.

And, even though there are some people who are rude and insensitive about correcting another person's mistakes, there are also those who are doing so to empart knowledge and wisdom. I make mistakes all the time. If I use improper english or misspell a word, many times I am grateful for being called on it. Otherwise, how am I to learn?

Perhaps, instead of ranting about it, learn from it.

If writing a formal letter I am all for proper English.

However on the INFORMAL DisBoards, I don’t believe that wrong spelling and improper grammatical form is of anyone’s concern. It is all too time consuming.

Proper Adults DO NOT publicly chastise other ADULTS in real life PUBLIC venues for speaking improperly nor should they do it here!
I agree with this :thumbsup2

First off, why aren't you posting on the teen threads where you are dealing with your peers who may not be as critical of you.

That said, why do you care what others think, especially in cyberspace. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I tell my students on a daily basis to "ignore." The sun will still come up tomorrow and the world will still be spinning. Anyone being mean to you, teens or adults, need to grow up and stop acting so juvenile. If they are perfect, great. If the rest of us are imperfect, also great.

Maybe you need to just slow down a little before you post. You can also write your post in a Word or Works document, do a spell/grammar check and cut and paste it to the boards. Just a suggestion, but it might help you feel more comfortable about your posting. Good luck and cheer up.

I think that an occasional misspelling, comitted by accident, is fine. I don't go back and proof-read my posts for grammar and spelling, but I will skim through for content. I have never had a big problem with grammar and spelling, and I try not to judge others by it. However, I do find it very frustrating when people misspell words and use incorrect grammar on purpose, simply to achieve a certain look. (I am not suggesting that the OP did that. Rather, I am speaking about my opinion in general.)

I agree with you in the fact that i absolutely cannot stand when people misspell and or do not use grammar correctly on purpus. This drives me insane. I have seen full paragraphs like this before and it just about killed me just to read it. Although I have seen it I truly believe that OP is not one to do that.
