So, yes, it is the school's fault.
I only half agree with you.
Sure, it's the school's responsibility to teach grammar and spelling. But, it's also the responsibility of the individual to LEARN grammar and spelling.
And, if the school is lacking, then the individual should take it upon him or herself to learn it. My "formal" education was nothing more than graduating from public high-school. However, my "informal" education never ends. I'm constantly reading, learning, and bettering myself. "Formal" education should be a foundation for learning, not the entire structure.
We are all constantly judged by how we look, how we act, and how we communicate. It's unfortunate, but it's true.
With the exception of those with real learning disabilities, if you choose ignorance instead of education, you're going to be labeled that way.
However, if *sometimes* you use capital letters to begin a sentence, and other times you don't, or if *sometimes* you capitilize "I" and other times you don't, or if *sometimes* you attempt to separate your thoughts into paragraphs and other times you ramble in one long run-on sentence, or if *sometimes* you put an apostrophe in a contraction and other times you don't - I would presume you know what is correct and you are just being lazy.
Its like saying if you dont know what 6.022 x 10 ^ 23 is then you cant possibly be smart
That may or may not be true, but complex mathematical formulas rarely come up in everyday conversation. Your grammar, both in writing and speech, is used to communcate. You may be a genius in other things, but if you speak or write improperly, unfortunately, that's how you will be judged. In normal, everyday communcation, people don't typically learn about your musical or math skills. But, they WILL have the opportunity to know your communication skills.
No one said learning and using proper grammar is easy. It's a skill. But, it's a skill you have to learn and work at. I'm sure you didn't just pick up your musical instrument one day and play. You worked hard and practiced. You have to do the same thing with grammar.
