Im SICK AND TIERD OF EVERYONES RUDE COMENTS ABOUT MY SPELLING AND GRAMER GET A FRIKIN LIFE! its not MY FULT! dont point it out! be glad the dis has a fliter or I be saying some thing else with this! GET A LIFE PEOPLE!

Don't let one comment get you down.

My husband and both kids are the world's worst spellers, but they're also the smartest people I know.

You were very quick to make a rash general judgmental statement about something that is truly not their fault...aging. It isn't nice, is it?

There will always be some that will bring it to your attention, especially if you choose to debate. I think there is a way to do spell check on here, but I'm not sure how.

You may not be the greatest speller, and we all have our faults. But, at least you try. I can always tell what you are trying to say. Don't take the rude comments to heart! :goodvibes :sunny:

If it's not your fault, then whose fault is it?

I am not familiar with the posts and threads to which you are referring, so please don't take this personally.

I have never corrected someone's bad grammar or improper spelling on the DIS. I do believe wholeheartedly that using proper grammer is very important. Right or wrong, the way one communicates creates a perception about that individual's education and intelligence. This is not a personal slam, but a generalization of how people think.

And, even though there are some people who are rude and insensitive about correcting another person's mistakes, there are also those who are doing so to empart knowledge and wisdom. I make mistakes all the time. If I use improper english or misspell a word, many times I am grateful for being called on it. Otherwise, how am I to learn?

Perhaps, instead of ranting about it, learn from it.

IMo there is a big difference between the occasional misspelled word and typo and one where it's obvious the person isn't even trying to get things right.

And to be honest, lack of paragraphs and punctuation bother me much more than spelling and grammar.

Look at it this way. I wouldn't have paid diddly-squat attention to your post if you hadn't been so snippy in the first place. I don't know about other people who have mentioned your lack of writing skills, so I can't answer for them.

If spelling and grammar are such issues, then you need to learn to use the tools that are available to deal with it. Not blame the world/teachers for your problems. You can learn to spell on your own. It isn't about a teacher's list but about how hard you are willing to work to deal with it.

Patting you on the head and saying "it's ok, don't you worry about those mean people" doesn't do anyone a bit of good!

Not trying to stir up the pot here but has anyone here heard of learning disabilities? :confused3 I don't know what the situation here is with the original poster. I'm just speaking from experience when I say I know someone who has dyslexia and struggles with spelling, grammar and the like. Spell check is wonderful if you know where to find it, use it, and have used a word that even resembles the correct spelling. Just remember we all have our strengths and weaknesses. Not everyone can be an English major.

There is a big difference in not everyone being an English major and what wouldn't even be acceptable for a first or second grader. Don't know where spell check is, ok, ever hear of a dictionary ?

If writing a formal letter I am all for proper English.

However on the INFORMAL DisBoards, I don’t believe that wrong spelling and improper grammatical form is of anyone’s concern. It is all too time consuming.

Proper Adults DO NOT publicly chastise other ADULTS in real life PUBLIC venues for speaking improperly nor should they do it here!

Also, Dis rules state if someone is being rude you can report them. That is the option I would use. Triangle on the bottom left of the screen. :thumbsup2

I totally agree.

And I think the OP did say in a different thread (the one s/he is referring to in the rant) that s/he is in ESE. I'm not sure what that is, but it sounds to me like it might be special education.

Maybe my English degree makes me more tolerant of mistakes instead of less, but I hate it when posters tear other people apart for poor grammar and spelling.

And these days, I do think it's the fault of our education system that these kids don't have better skills in grammar. Whatever happened to classes in grammar and spelling? Kids used to drill constantly (heh, and remember sentence diagramming?), and I'm not seeing that done at all in the schools. The last grade that does spelling in our schools is in the 6th, and basically, they hand out a list of words on Monday, then the kids are tested on Friday. Even the brightest kids fail miserably in their spelling. Now we're too busy trying to teach to those stupid tests, so it's all about reading comprehension and vocabulary (NOT spelling). Even on the writing portion of the tests, grammar and spelling don't count -- it's all about content.

So, yes, it is the school's fault.

not trying to burn fires within fires, but I would just like to say on behalf of caty I also have great troubles with spelling and grammar. When it counts I always check my work, but on here I dont feel the need to take up so much of my time to check my grammar and spelling. ( not bosting but just wanted to point out..) As you said people's writing and grammar shows a person's individual intelligance and education.. I really dont believe that is all intirely true. I am a very intelligant person, and as I said have great struggles with grammar and spelling. I make straight A's in all Honors and AP classes and Im in Symphonic and Marching band. Do I think there is a way to tell a person's intelligance from the way they write? No.. I really dont believe it, Its like saying if you dont know what 6.022 x 10 ^ 23 is then you cant possibly be smart.. Ahum it has to do with science and math.. :rolleyes1 I just wanted to point out that i take responsibility that i am a horific in spelling and grammar but it isn't worth it to me to check every single thing i write.. because if i did there would be no way I could ever get to write in all of the things that i enjoy writing in on the dis in a day.

I don't think we are supposed to report 'rude' threads, LOL. I believe that little triangle is for reporting much worse offenses than simple rudeness.

To the OP, you are making yourself a target. Every time you post something someone disagrees with, especially since you have an aggressive posting style, people will be coming out of the woodwork to tell you how your opinion doesn't count because you cannot spell or use proper grammar. Implying, of course, that you lack the intelligence to have an informed opinion.

FTR, I implied no such thing. I implied that the OP had made an arbitrarily rash statement about the abilities of the elderly which would be like me making a rash statement about the abilities of poor writers.

It is an analogy. One of those things no longer tested, because african americans did better on them than the causcasians...
