Rant on Teeth

Most dental work is akin to surgery. It's too bad dental insurance doesn't cover what medical insurance would if the surgery was performed on another body part. Consider what a dentist charges for spending an hour with you and performing labor and skill intensive work as opposed to what a physician charges (and gets paid) to see you for all of 7 minutes (including chat time).

So for those in the know.... if root canals mean you must get a crown and a crown is only guaranteed for five years, what happens next? That is a ton of money to invest in one tooth that will only last 5 or 6 years.

I broke a tooth last year and had root canal and crown--$800. At my cleaning this year, the dentist thought the crown was loose and needed to be re-done. I put her off and at the next cleaning the older, more experienced dentist thought the whole tooth was loose. He referred me to an endodontist for another root canal....she took a look at it and told me to just pull the tooth....ended up she was right. The tooth was cracked but didn't show up on the x-rays. I was so glad I got it pulled so I didn't end up paying another $800 for root canal and crown.

In the same boat. I had to have 2 crowns (1 a replacement, one a new one) and I actually go in today to get the permanent ones put in. I'm looking at about $1,500, none of it will be reimbursed as my health care doesn't cover teeth. Super bummer.

We have had much the same.

This year:

New roof (was leaking for a while)-$9K
New heat pump in Oct. for $6K
DH dental work-root canal- $650 OOP!

I am sure there are more if I think about it, but those are the ones we couldn't ignore because they either didn't work or were leaking!

Well, I have to agree, there should be some rule against, but seems like with my luck something bad is always lurking around the corner.

We have had to have 3 pets put to sleep this year after several thousands of dollars of medical care.

My roof has been leaking

I need my septic tank pumped

I have had $2000 worth of dental work

We dropped $6000 in January for an all new heating and AC unit

And we still have what 6 weeks until the end of the year, I just hope nothing else happens and I am very sure there are others that have had a far worse year.

Both of dh's silver fillings just fell out, I have a herniated disc That means several dr appt's and PT 2x's a week each at $20.00 also a MRI which I have not met my deductible so its $750.00. I canceled all my appts. Why pay me deductible now when I can do it in Jan. and last the whole year. I just cant do it so close to Christmas, it's already going to be tight as it is.

I also have some medical and dental issues and my health insurance ded is so high that it renders my HI pretty useless unless there is a severe emergency. So I often don't go to the doctors and I almost never go to the dentist.

I'm scared because my already bad vision is getting worse and I know that will mean a trip to the eye doc next year. My insurance doesnt even cover that at all... :rolleyes1
