so, our dog died last night, and the kids and I are home from school and work. I was thinking of taking them to a movie later today, but I definitely want something light and funny- NO SAD PARTS! Which would you recommend? Anything sad in either one? Thanks!

What age are your children?

I haven't seen Gnomeo and Juliet, and while I doubt it ends in Gnomeo, Juliet, and Gnomeo's mom all dieing (like in the source material), I would suspect there is something sad.

As for Rango, while I don't really recall anything sad, I found it a little inappropriate for really little kids. I mean, you've got a giant snake that says he came from Hell, and a Armadillo squished in half by a tire (but still alive and talking). While I have a warped sense of humor, and was OK with my 10 and 14 year old watching it, if I had seen it with them only first, I would have avoided taking my 3 and 5 year old nieces to the movie. They didn't cry or anything, but there were a few points where I was thinking "wow, I'm not sure about this...". Rango was REALLY FUNNY though. I enjoyed it a lot.

I took my DDs to Gnomeo and Juliet. Funny, happy movie. We all really liked it. It was better than I expected even...no sad parts.

I thought Gnomeo and Juliette was dumb but the 10 7 years that I had with me all liked it.

It's a little tense at the end but it all works out.

Haven't seen Rango yet....but we liked Gnomeo and Juliet. It was pretty dumb for adults, but I think the kids like it. There were some very funny parts.

Thanks, all. It seems like either is a good choice. Unfortunately (fortunately?), they're at they age where they appreciate inappropriate jokes, so Rango seems like it'd be best, but we'll see what the movie times are.

I thought rango was one of the worst movies I have ever seen...I did not feel like it was a kid movie at all and I am not a prude...just did not like it.

I haven't seen Rango yet, but I've seen several threads on the Dis (maybe on the Family board?) complaining that it isn't appropriate for children. It's rated PG for rude humor, language, action and smoking.

I loved Gnomeo and Juliet. It's rated G. If you know Romeo and Juliet you can imagine what the one sad scene is - SLIGHT SPOILER - There's a scene where you are briefly led to believe a major character is dead. You find out pretty quickly that they are alive but the other characters don't know for quite a while and they are sad about it. There is definitely quite a bit of G&J that is aimed at adults - lots of little details and in-jokes that kids probably wouldn't catch. The kids in the theater all seemed to really enjoy it, and most adults I know who have seen it loved it.

I KNOW R&J, alright! I'm currently teaching it! I wondered how they were going to handle the body count!:rotfl2:

There's a statue of Shakespeare who interacts with the character everyone thinks is dead. He tells the character that the situation can't end well, and then tells the real R&J story and says that's what will happen to G&J. The character sets out to prevent that, and Shakespeare says it won't work. But since this is a Disney movie, it has to have a happy ending. :) So there isn't really a body count, but there is definitely some talk about death. It's handled in a funny way, though, with Shakespeare insisting it's a tragedy and the other character arguing that it won't be.

Now that I think about it, there's one other sad scene. There is a character who is mostly there for comic relief but he has a sad back story where he loses his true love (she doesn't die, though). But I don't think most kids would find it that sad, and even his character ends up happy in the end.

I saw Gnomeo & Juliet w/o kids and loved it! There are a few inside jokes the kids probably won't get (the moving company is called Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern) but the animation was good and the dialog was enough to make me laugh out loud more than once. I also enjoyed trying to figure out who was doing the voiceovers; I knew some of them from the reviews but some just made me say "who IS that?" and when the credits rolled around, it was like "of COURSE!" Fun movie, highly recommended.

Saw Rango and HATED it!! I love inappropriate humor and I barely even cracked a smile for most of the movie. Waste of time.

Gnomeo and Juliet was really cute and funny. We enjoyed that one A LOT more.

Oh, wait. There is a character in the beginning that is run over by a car. He lives, but there is a giant tire track across his body.

Might not be appropriate for a family with a recent dog death.
