They come across a mystery 'by coincidence' and then go around looking for clues. At some point, they come across the bad guy and run away from him/her. When they've found the right clues, they set up a trap which usually has Daphne as the damsel in distress, and sometimes includes a musical number. They catch the villain who's in a disguise and turns out to be someone they previously met, whether it makes logical sense or not. The villain then quips that could could of got away with haunting the area if it were not for the gang. Scooby & Shaggy have a snack at some point during the episode.
