I was reading about bottom-up profiling for Psychology and that's what the first paragraph was. Bottom-up profiling looks at the clues left behind during murders and rapes and also eyewitness accounts to build up a view of what the guy might look like, his personality, where he lives, etc. The most famous and most successful case study for bottom-up profiling was on a guy called John Duffy, who raped and murdered several women in train stations. They looked at clues and interviews of survivors found things like where he'd most likely live, his age, his hair color, his personality, his social status, whether he'd been arrested before, etc. When they arrested the guy, much of the profile was accurate.
