Curiouser and curiouser! You'll feel like Alice when you climb aboard your caterpillar car and take a tour of Wonderland, encountering many of its colorful and eccentric inhabitants along the way.

ATTRACTION

Alice in Wonderland is located on the edge of Fantasyland next to the Mad Tea Party and across from the Matterhorn.

The queue and the loading area are outside and exposed -- it can get quite warm on a sunny day. The attraction closes when it rains.

This is a "dark" ride that proceeds through many scenes from the movie, like Tulgey Wood, the Queen's rose garden, the infamous croquet match, and the Mad Hatter's Un-birthday party, each scene accompanied by the corresponding song.

INTERESTING FACTS

This was the second Disneyland attraction based on the Alice in Wonderland movie, and opened in June 1958.

At the beginning of the ride the caterpillar goes up hill, and comes down a hill at the end -- the Alice in Wonderland attraction is built on the second floor of the ride building that houses Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.

The caterpillar cars have six color patterns: all green, green/blue-green, all pink, pink/purple, all yellow, and yellow/orange.

Along Matterhorn Way next to the attraction is an alcove with a figure of the Cheshire Cat. Some of the hammer birds are located on the rocks above him.

The Alice in Wonderland attraction was re-done as part of the "New Fantasyland" project of 1983. An "upside-down" room was removed, and the tea party scene was relocated to the end of the ride.

Casey Jr., the circus train from the Disney animated feature Dumbo, takes guests on a tour around Storybook Land.

ATTRACTION

Casey Jr. Circus Train is located in the back of Fantasyland next to Dumbo. An unshaded queue switchbacks up to the boarding area, where guests can select which of the cars on the miniature circus train they wish to sit in. In addition to two open-air cars there are two "wild animal" cages with bars on them.

The train takes a short, approximately three-minute ride around the perimeter of Storybook Land. Storybook Land contains miniature scenes from many favorite Disney animated movies, such as the castle from Cinderella, the Seven Dwarfs cottage, and the palace of Agrabah. Notice the miniature plants, also -- some very fine examples of the Japanese art of Bonsai.

INTRODUCTION

The children of the world host this simplistic yet charming, whimsical, and gentle boat ride. Small boats glide along the international waters and you are very quickly surrounded by dancing dolls, animals and flowers, singing that now almost infamous song, "it's a small world."

Walt Disney originally designed the attraction for the Pepsi-Cola Company to benefit UNICEF at the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. When the Fair closed, the attraction was moved to Disneyland where it opened in July 1966.

ATTRACTION

"it's a small world" is considered a Fantasyland attraction, yet it occupies its own separate building outside of the main Fantasyland area. The building is practically an attraction in and of itself - the facade is a crazy quilt of different shapes and patterns, and incorporates architectural features from a variety of countries such as pagodas and minarets. In the center of the facade is a huge clock, with a smiling face that continuously rocks back and forth. Every 15 minutes the doors below the clock face open and there's a musical "children's march of nations". This is followed by the opening of another pair of doors to reveal a set of blocks that give the current time -- hour and minute.

The grounds around the building feature a veritable zoo of topiary animals, including moose, dolphins, giraffe, and elephant.

The queue is entirely outdoors, and winds down a ramp to the loading area.

As your boat serenely glides along for 10-1/2 minutes, you'll be entertained by many audio-animatronics including doll figures, toys, animated props and even characters from Disney movies. Each room you pass through has a theme, with the audio animatronic dolls outfitted in clothing and props that reflect their respective cultures. The major themes include: Europe, Asia, Africa, Central/South America, South Pacific Islands, the U.S.A., the Finale and the Good-bye Scene. Listen to the lyrics of the song -- throughout the cruise you'll hear it in Spanish, French, and Japanese, to name a few.

During the 11-month refurbishment in 2008-2009 a number of changes were made. These include:

The boats were redesigned to look like a child's toy boat, with brighter colors. They also hold fewer passengers.
The new "Spirit of America" room, featuring a scene of the American west based on a painting by Mary Blair, replaced the Rainforest Room. A new version of the rainforest was moved to the South Seas room.
29 characters from Disney and Disney*Pixar movies were added to the attraction. These include Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, Alice in Wonderland and the White Rabbit, Cinderella, Jacques, and Gus, Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket, Mulan and Mushu, Aladdin, Jasmine, and Abu, Donald Duck, Panchito and Jose Carioca, Simba, Pumbaa and Timon, Ariel and Flounder, Dory and Nemo, Lilo and Stitch, and Jessie, Bullseye, and Woody.
The soundtrack has been augmented in places and familiar Disney movie theme music has been added, appropriate to the scene and the characters. theme songs from some of the Disney movies. For example, "Golden Afternoon" can be heard near Alice in Wonderland, and "A Whole New World" near Jasmine and Aladdin.

Morgan: And I'm Morgan!

Sara: Your hosts of the Dating Game, have a good night folks!

The girls who are the bachelors are doing pretty much all improv, they know mostly what to say, but ya know, not exactly. And we have signs that say applause for the audience to actually participate, it's pretty cool. It's just like a real game show, and it's so stupid, it's funny. You've got to know what the bachelors say though, and I don't feel like typing it all out xD

During the holiday season (first week of November through first week of January) it's a small world is transformed into a holiday fantasy. The outside of the building, including all of the topiary animals, are decorated with white lights and the clock face wears a Santa hat. Inside the building it seems like everyone and everything is in the holiday spirit. There are signs proclaiming "Happy Holidays", "Merry Christmas", and "Happy New Year" in many different languages, holiday and fireworks displays, and everyone is dressed in their holiday best. The animals get into the spirit of the season, too -- there's reindeer with red noses, and the kiwi birds have jingle bells on their beaks. Even the soundtrack has a holiday flavor -- for most of the ride it alternates verses of "it's a small world" with Jingle Bells. Be sure and listen as you pass by the mermaids, though, since they sing their own version: Jingle Shells. In the "Goodbye" room everyone joins together in a chorus of Deck the Halls.

INTRODUCTION

Disneyland's landmark Matterhorn Mountain is the home of the Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction -- take a thrilling roller coaster ride up, down, and through Matterhorn Mountain.

ATTRACTION

The Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction actually has two different queues -- one that begins on the Fantasyland side of the mountain, and one on the Tomorrowland side. The queues are entirely outdoors, though the final portion of the queue is covered. The attraction itself has two different tracks, and which one you ride depends on which queue you choose. If the timing is right you'll be dispatched at the same time and can "race" the bobsled next to you.

The bobsleds will seat up to four people seated single file. (More Seating Photos) They have two compartments, which will each seat two friendly people -- the larger passenger should get in first, and the smaller passenger will sit between their legs. It's not a very comfortable seat, especially when the ride starts bouncing around. The person in the back has a back rest which helps, though. Each passenger has their own seat belt. These are NOT retractable seatbelts -- instead it's a long strap that buckles into a shorter strap on the opposite side and you must pull or loosen the strap to adjust it to fit.

After leaving the boarding area the bobsled goes up hill, then comes down the mountain. There are many tight jerky turns -- this is definitely not a smooth ride. Inside the mountain there's several encounters with the Abominable Snowman before the bobsled eventually splashes down in the lake and proceeds to the unloading area.

Join J. Thaddeus Toad and his friends on a wild horseless carriage ride to no place in particular. Semper absurda!

ATTRACTION

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride is located in Fantasyland next to Peter Pan's Flight. The building's exterior is themed as an old English manor house - Toad Hall. Most of the queue is outside under a vine-covered arbor that provides some shade for most of the year, and blooms profusely in the spring.

Upon entering the building there's a statue of Mr. Toad on the left that provides a good photo opportunity.

The motor cars seat two people, and are named after Mr. Toad and his friends - Toady, Badger, Cyril, Moley, Ratty, Weasel, and Winkie. The steering wheel spins but does not control the movement at all.

The car makes lots of sharp turns as it proceeds on its wild tour of merry old England, passing the homes of Toad's friends and crashing through haystacks and other obstacles, all while avoiding unsuspecting livestock and other innocent bystanders. But all good things must come to an end and eventually the long arm of the law reaches out. Following a daring escape from the police there's an unfortunate encounter with a train, and everyone ends up in Hell, where the devil bears a striking resemblance to the judge. But all is not lost, and the car and its passengers emerge back into the sunlight and safety of the loading area.

NOTE: For more about this attraction, see Mr. Toad's Wild Ride Archive page in our Walt Disney World section!

Anyone seen the new queue for Winnie the Pooh. It looks really nice, and they're still adding to it.

INTRODUCTION

When you wish upon a star...your dreams come true! Join Pinocchio on his adventures as he leaves the quiet streets of Geppetto's village to experience the excitement of Pleasure Island and the terrors of the belly of Monstro the whale.

ATTRACTION

Pinocchio's Daring Journey is located in Fantasyland next to Snow White's Scary Adventures. The queue enters the building and winds around a bit before reaching the loading area. Each car has two rows and seats up to 4 people. This is a "dark" ride where the car enters the attraction and travels through rooms representing a variety of scenes from the movie. These include Stromboli's marionette show, Pleasure Island, and Monstro the whale.

There are some nice special effects -- fiberoptic fireworks in Pleasure Island and a holographic Blue Fairy in the final scene in Gepetto's workshop - but look quickly as your car enters that room or you'll miss her.

INTRODUCTION

Take a laid-back canal cruise in Fantasyland past meticulously crafted miniature scenes from classic Disney films.

ATTRACTION

As you take a gentle boat ride, through the mouth of Monstro the Whale (above, present day, and circa 1963 -- ALL EARS® Senior Editor Deb Koma is the little girl on the right, above) and into Storybook Land, your live host will point out charming miniature sites that include:
--Pinocchio's cobblestone village
--Aladdin's Agrabah
--Alice's Wonderland
--The ball where Cinderella met Prince Charming

Along with these scenes, you'll see some really wonderful bonsai plants -- fine examples of the Japanese art of miniature gardening.

INTERESTING FACTS

This is one of only two Disneyland park attractions where a live host rides with you and narrates the attraction. (The other is the Jungle Cruise.)

Keep your eyes open for new scenes. This attraction is kept up-to-date with scenes from contemporary Disney stories.

All of the boats are named after female Disney characters except for Flower -- the male skunk from Bambi.

Monstro's eye opens and closes, and occasionally steam comes out of his blowhole.
