What do you do with your paycheck stubs or, as in my case entire check due to direct deposit? Bank statements? (need to sign up for online). Health insurance statement of benefits?

I used to keep them all in a file, prior to moving 18 months ago. Since then I might have filed them all away, once. Now it's time to clean out the file drawers, which are too full to add anything new.

The envelopes are piling up - in the file, more in a tray-like carton on top of the filing cabinet waiting to be filed and more still filling the desktop bin waiting to go to the cardboard tray and eventually filed.

But clearing out the old requires shredding. My shredder isn't that good, and the can is filled with more old bills/statements from the past year that need to be shredded too.

I guess I despise shredding and filing. Both are boring tasks that are time-consuming, and because I leave until I am good and ready to sit down and waste a few hours cleaning up the mess I've left for myself, I feel I need to cleanse myself of the need I feel to keep them.

Maybe if I breakdown and buy a new shredder that actually shreds paper I would get it over with immediately instead of waiting for the stack to overwhelm me. I'd love to get a cross-cut that can also shred credit cards and CDs.

I have files for everything and once a year around March I clean out and shred everything from the previous year. You can get a decent shredder at a place like Staples for $50 or less. It's a worthwhile investment these days.
