Random question: 'Happy New Year'

Only 10 days into the year. Probably into February before I stop saying Happy New Year.

It’s not really a thing I would say to someone unless it was in response to them saying it to me first. Well, that’s not completely true, I guess. I would say it at a New Year’s party, but once that’s over, it’s over, as far as I’m concerned.

I only say it in response to someone else saying it to me. I am pretty sure I only said it once this year and technically it was a text not verbal.

I did have someone wish me a happy 2023 today.

When I go back to work, which is either January 2nd or 3rd depending on when the 1st hit. Usually don't say anything though and encounter very few people who do after the fact. Lots of have a good new year prior but not much after.

Never paid too close of attention to know the exact day. Usually after the first two weeks I rarely hear it, or say it.

Now, what is more pressing for me is the Christmas decor/lights outside. I will give you until Jan 6th, the Epiphany, but after that time to take them down. Or at least turn them off, the holidays are over. :-)

I haven't said it once this year. I've tried to be upbeat over the last few years and have been slapped in the face for it every year. (not literally) So this year it is just "Have a good day". I don't care to think beyond one day at a time.

For a first encounter after January 1st, usually up to the end of January. I'm a well-wisher, haha.
:thumbsup2This, exactly. I’ve talked to almost all my friends and family members since January 1 but I’m still communicating with colleagues and customers for the first time, so I’m still saying it daily. I’ve stopped saying it to service people in stores and restaurants and such, now though.

Happy New Year is one of the few well wishes I can offer someone without stepping in it (well, until this thread...).

I generally say/type it to friends/colleagues through mid January to those I haven't talked to or emailed yet.

Same as when your Christmas tree should be gone. You can stop by the 6th of January.

Two weeks or so into January, when I see or speak to someone for the first time this year. I don’t mind it.

LOL, our outdoor decorations are down except for a wreath (real pine) that I usually keep up until the end of January. But here sometimes it depends on the weather. There have been years with long stretches of snow, ice and frigid cold, when it wasn’t practical to climb on the roof to take down lights and others are frozen stuck on the bushes (though we do keep them unlit). And in parts of upstate NY and New England, it is a very common to see Christmas decor on through the winter, well into February or even March.

Also, FWIW, for some, it is not Epiphany, but rather Candlemas, that signals the end of the Christmas season. Candlemas, or the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, is February 2, and is related to the origin of the secular tradition of Groundhog Day.

Good to know. I never knew about Candlemas. Learn something everyday!!

And I totally get not being able to take down due to outdoor conditions. My only request is turn them off, if possible. But now I will try and give grace to Feb 2nd ... ;)
