I just recently finished the Kingdom Keepers: Disney at Dawn book and had an odd question. So, Chernabog is supposed to be this big bad villain.....but how/why did he get such a bad reputation? As far as I know he has only appeared in Fantasia and didn't do anything too terrible in that, so how did he become "The baddest of the bad. The most powerful demon Walt Disney ever created" to quote the book?

Good question. Maybe this explains it? :confused3

Chernabog is a massive nocturnal demon who holds power over various restless souls. He serves as the protagonist and villain of this segment. His name is taken from Chernobog, a deity of Slavic mythology; the name is Slavic for "black god". While officially a pagan god, it should also be noted that Chernabog might have originally been intended to be Satan: when "Night on Bald Mountain" appeared on the original Wonderful World of Disney, Walt Disney referred to Chernabog as "Satan himself."

Then there's also this from the Disney Archives.

From his perch high upon Bald Mountain, Chernabog unfolds his wings and casts his dark shadow over the sleeping village. Born of nightmare and myth, he conjures writhing harpies and fiends, and calls the spirits of the restless dead to perform at his beckoning. His minions live and die at his whim, feeding the fire with their bones when he's wearied of their devotion. Chernabog is king of the darkness and no human dares walk the night while he's abroad! His evil power stands against anything -- except the clean light of the sacred dawn. When the sweet notes of morning break over the mountain, the monster must crawl back into hiding, for against the purity of the day, his evil is helpless. But Chernabog is never gone, he merely waits for the coming of another night, and the chance to continue the eternal battle between light and dark.
