Can anyone give me a quick Rainbow Loom 101 lesson? My 9 year old wants one for Xmas but I honestly don't know anything about them. I have a neighbor who sells kits - comes with generic (adjustable) loom, 1800 bands, 100 clips and some charms in an organizer for $40 - is that a good deal? Would that be a good starter kit? My daughter has no idea how to make them but I heard they can learn easily from YouTube videos -true?

I just don't want to spend $40+ on the latest "trend" that ends up in her closet!

Thanks!!

I'm pretty sure that is waaaaaaay overpriced. I've seen kits with the loom & bands for around $12.

$40 seems like too much. We picked up Rainbow Loom at a Hallmark store for around $20. Many discount stores like Five Below are carrying knockoffs plus the bands. I got a good deal at Joann Fabrics for 1000 band packages on sale for $1.99. Also, check Michael's crafts. They carry them and I think you can use a coupon too.

I bought a loom kit with 300 bands for $5 at a store called 5below. Michael's has the brand band one for $16. Please don't pay $40

Wow! $40 is a lot. Especially for a generic. Michaels has the original Rainbow Loom for 16.99, and I just got a ton of bands in Ac Moore. Each bag of 300 bands was 1.00 (that was a sale price, the regular price was 1.99). There is a store in our mall that sells bags of 300 for 1.00 as their regular price.
You can get an organizer for a reasonable price using a coupon at Michaels or AC Moore.

If you actually price out the different components that price is a very good price. The Rainbow loom and 600 bands is $18 on Amazon. You will get 3 times that many bands. The additional 1200 bands is worth $14. The charms are $1.50 each and those organizers go for $20 on Ebay. So I would say what your neighbor offered you is a good deal and I would buy it. I didn't have someone offering me a package deal and I bought the items separately. For those who think it is too much have obviously not priced the stuff out. Also getting 100 clips is more than what you normally get in a kit. You don't want cheap generic bands because they will pop and break.

I got my dd's at TRU. Only paid $14 for it and bought some extra bands for like $1.60 a pack (they were buy one get one 1/2). It definitely is a fad for her. She used it for about a week, then it has gotten shelved.

My daughter uses her's on and off. The kit should cost you no more than $20 and you can get a organizer at a craft store for a couple dollars. Look to Youtube for the best, easy to follow instructions on how to make the different bracelets.

I paid 14.99 for the rainbow loom. And then bought the generic at Walmart for ~$10 for toys for tots. I think 20 is the most you should pay.

I would just buy her the genuine Rainbow Loom starter kit at Michael's or something - it's around $17 and comes with the loom, mini-loom, hook, c-clips and 600 multi-colored rubber bands. That should be enough to get your DD started - if she likes it, you can pick up a storage kit and more rubber bands at your leisure.

My kids have one but they don't use the loom part at all. They both learned how to make them on their fingers. They actually use it a lot and have made a ton of bracelets.

My 8 year old (actually 9 in a week) is super into rainbow looming, and it is one of those things that I think is worth buying the original loom. The cost is reasonable and there are a few things about the original that make it work better than most knock offs (has to do with how the looks can be re-configured and with the smooth quality of edges that makes looming more efficient).

Like another said, buy the starter kit and see how she responds. We started with that and expanded from there as her interest dictated. You tube is a super way to learn all of the various patterns.

The additional 1200 bands are just $8 at least they would be from michaels. $3.99/600 bands. $40 is still not a bad deal. The organizer is expensive and the charms are too. Your neighbor is doing it to make $ so of course you would be able to save a bit doing it yourself, but I'd consider it.

That trend is fading fast here. The looms can be bought for $16 or about $9 fo the knockoff.
Or use a 40% off code from Michaels and get the loom for just $9.60

The case can be found at 5 Below. Same with charms and bands. My kids never got into charms but they are boys, so maybe girls like them?

So I think it's grossly overpriced.

To the poster that said it's a good deal, the op said it comes with knock off loom and nothing about the type of bands. If they are also knock offs they could have come from the dollar store.

I personally would start with the 9.60 kit from Michaels The $5 case from 5Below. And a few packs of bands at about $3 each. Our 5 Below even had scented bands that my kids loved.

Our michaels has signs all over that you can not use a coupon on the rainbow loom.

I have boys who are more into video games so I am in no way a rainbow loom expert. But I was with a friend shopping who was looking for official rainbow loom bands. She said her daughter got a bunch of knock off ones and kept crying because they did not work. My friend thought she was being over dramatic until the girl's friends came to visit and had the same issues. They all said it was the bands. So my friend will now only buy the official bands. Her daughter is now making bracelets happily.

Yep ours too and even on BF the kit was only $2.00 cheaper.

Just a quick note I happened to see on Target (for online) they have a bucket of like 2400 bands (different color sets) for $14.99 and then you get a $5.00 Target gift card.

Yep. I just checked the coupon I got in my email this morning, and Rainbow Loom and bands are excluded in the fine print.
