We'll be in Waikiki this Thursday and Friday and they are calling for a 60% chance of showers. Just curious what "typical" rain is in Hawaii - is it like Florida with heavy downpours for a bit and then humid sunshine? Should we expect an all day drizzle? Pop up showers? We have plans to hike Diamond Head on Friday and want to dress right, but also were curious if hikes are ever cancelled due to inclement weather. Thanks!

It's usually 10-15 minutes of warm sprinkles, at least the "rain showers" I've experienced there. No one runs for cover, they just continue to do what they are doing.

Weather in Honolulu is inconsistent, as it fluctuates and change throughout the day. It can be pouring rain on one part of the island, drive 10 minutes a way and it's sunny. My dress won't change based on rain, since showers are always expected. Shorts is perfect for the hike and bringing a poncho just in case. You may see tourists with dresses and nice attire lol. The terrain for Diamond Head is novice with rails with no slippery ledges or cliffs. Keep in mind that if it rains expect your shoes to get dirty as it can get dusty. If you google map diamond head drag the yellow street view guy to the mountain, it will give you images of the trail.

When I was in Waikiki in July "rain showers" meant a few minutes of sprinkles to a few minutes of misting.

Then I went to the North Shore and found out "rain showers" there meant all day on and off downpours lol.

In addition to what igomezhnl said, I find that if you're at the coast you might get no rain at all, and if you go inland even 1/2 a mile it could be pouring. MOst of the time when the forecast says rain for honolulu, the beaches are fine.

But, I will say it's humid this week. It's not anything like Florida summer humid (heck, it's not even like it was in Mass summer humid) but it's humid for honolulu. And it's been rainy a lot this week. Like actual downpours.

We are at Aulani now, and though we have a had a few days of rain, today, its pouring! We are oceanside and can't see the water for the rain. Looks like Fri will be your best day for outside activities. It has been humid for sure, not unbearable though. Luckily, we spent considerable time outside yesterday at Aulani by the lagoon. It was great!

This weather is not typical. We have thunderstorm warning and brown water advisory in effect today (14 Sep 2016)

State of Hawaii / Dept of Health / Clean Water Branch

A Brown Water Advisory is being issued for the island of Oahu due to heavy rains. The public is advised to stay out of flood waters and storm water runoff due to possible overflowing cesspools, sewer manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals, and associated flood debris. Not all waters may be affected, however if the water is brown stay out and continue to practice good personal hygiene and follow up with your primary care physician if you have any health concerns.

We got flash flood warnings last night. It's been stinking miserable all day. The rain - uggh. And the humidity. Luckily, it seems to have broken within the last hour or so. I went into the grocery store and came out to less humidity. Gotta love hawaii.

Also, worth noting, traffic sucks when it rains here.

WOW, now THAT is a warning that will get your attention!! *shudder*

We had flash flood warnings this morning too. Its' always fun when everyone's phone alerts at 5am. Loudly. We had thunder this morning too. That is a big deal. But it looks sunny now. I'd avoid the mountains because it looks like it's hanging, but it seems sunny from Pearl City area down to Waikiki. I probably wouldn't go hiking anywhere though.
