i was watching this show today about the world's first time machine (hasn't been finished yet) and it was narrated by Tom Baker (if you don't get the joke Tom Baker was one of the doctors in Doctor Who which is a show based on travelling through time)
they're still making it now for a long explaination for this question
is there such thing as a paradox? there can't be because take Simon Wells has gone back in time to kill H.G.Wells after reading The Time Machine. We know that H.G.Wells lived and wasn't killed and we also know Simon Wells is still alive at this moment. This means Simon Wells couldn't really kill H.G.Wells and would probably misfire or he would get caught before this and get sent to jail. If the latter happened and H.G.Wells came to prison to ask why he did this and Simon Wells told the whole story, H.G.Wells might forgive him and in the end this might be the influence for The Time Machine. So this means our lives might be set. But in the case of parallel universes anything we do in a parallel universe isn't set because we have come from one universe to another which means like a snooker ball rebounds and is about to crash into a lamp but it doesn't because it gets stopped. If this ball goes into the past to crash the lamp it won't because of what i said above. But if a ball went into another universe, it would disappear from this universe and appear out of nowhere in the other universe and since it doesn't actually belong in this new universe it can then crash into the lamp.
btw Simon Wells is the great grandfather of H.G.Wells and a movie director making a film version of his famous book The Time Machine
it was pretty interesting in that they are so close to bringing time travel to live (except it can only travel to the past to the point where the time machine was first turned on)
