Ok, I need at least one of you to read this and tell me what you think.
Honest opinions.
Anything I need to change? Can make it better?
I have to memorize it and present it Tuesday and me and a friend are taking both of our speeches to competition Thursday so I need it to be perfect. TIA.
Stealthy you trudge through the overgrown luscious green bushes and the aged oak wood trees of the forest. A new project that you had been working on for your college science class. Your project takes you to a forest of southeast Asia. You were on your way to discover the effects that precipitation had on the lively plants and animals in the area. Staying close to the rugged road as suggested by your guide, she takes you on a wondrous journey of miraculous wildlife. You are hiking along your way when your guide quickly outstretches her arm in front of you. She orders you to stay put as she tiptoes over the dank and dewy twigs, leaves, and the mushy soil. As you stand like a statue you catch a glimpse of what has caused your guide to react so suddenly. There is a large black trash bag lying in the brush up ahead. It looks as though something was inside of it. You wouldnt usually find trash bags in the forest. your guide begins to explain. She bends over carefully and unties the end of the bag. A bright black and orange print jumps out at you. There you see sharp shiny claws but no teeth like youd expect. Looks like someone dumped it here. Your guide then proceeds to pull out her cell phone dialing numbers. Looks like a trade gone wrong. Bengal Tiger it seems. Traded or Killed for its teeth Im guessing. Well take it back to the truck. she declares.
Illegal wildlife Trade has been a huge problem for several years. When most people think of endangered species they usually believe they are hunted and killed by poachers or some sort of that. What they dont know is that illegal wildlife trade also has a huge impact on the environment. What makes trade illegal is if it directly impacts the survival of the Animal. This problem causes endangerment to wildlife and pushes many animals on the path to extinction. Its also the second largest threat behind habitat loss. This does not only pose a problem to the thriving animals but to the plants as well. What most of these wildlife traders are after is money. Although along with money they also trade for food, construction, drugs and clothing. For example, sometimes utensils are traded with Animal Skin. It is estimated that $300 million worth of illegal wildlife imports enters the US each year. (Lewis) The effects of the illegal trade on humans and domesticated animals are not good either.
Many diseases transfer from the animals or plants into humans and other wildlife when they are sent to different countries and these diseases spread. Since wildlife is sometimes traded for Drugs and medicine these wildlife traders smuggle illegal drugs into the US. These trades also effect many people especially those very poor that depend on local wild animals for medicine, food, and fuel, along with hurting the countries ability to sustain its natural wildlife. And last but not least it drains the money from the country on stopping these trades instead if this was not a problem it would be used to replant forests and buy medical help and other things for helping wildlife.
You want to know the consequences of illegal animal trade? Unfortunately the punishment for this act is a lot less horrible then you would imagine. With the center of these trades occurring in the UK the maximum prison sentence for illegal animal and plant traders is only 2 years. This is hardly a decent punishment as the money these traders earn is nothing compared to a mere 2 years in prison. At this moment the World Wildlife Fund is striving for a 5 year prison sentence for Illegal animal trade. What can you do to help?
Many organizations are helping this cause and accept donations. Even though this is not a huge problem in the United States it does effect you. you can still do your part to help stop this problem. Other organizations have set up hotlines which are open to anyone that has suspicions or findings of illegal animal trade. Be cautious while searching at online auctions such as Ebay. This is where many illegal wildlife trading goes on. If you find any of these auctions that look suspicious contact the online website immediately. Also discourage, the purchasing of wildlife goods. Such as goods coming from ivory and turtle shell. One other thing you can do is learn more about the trade of live animals and maybe even start a campaign in your local community and spread awareness!
As a member of the World Wildlife Fund your guide assists you back through the forest to her truck. You drive back to her worksite where they take the unfortunate deceased Tiger in. She says they will do some searching on how the tiger lost its life and apologizes for the detour in your trip. Even though you have nothing for your original project you learned a ton of facts and with the help of your guide change your project of an overview of illegal wildlife trade.
