Someone walk up and just say whatever they wanted to you . This has happen to me several times . My 3 yr old Nephew (he is going to " Moush Housh" with me :D ) is half black and half white.I am Italian and have olive skin and green eyes( his mom is my half sister)my husband is what I lovingly call white bread . We take my DN everywhere with us but he clearly does not look like us.
A lady walked up to us in Home Depot and said "How kind of you to adopt a child like that" She was smiling when she said it ! I do not think she ment it mean , she just wasnt thinking at all .

2 days ago the lady in the Deli flat out asked me while she cut my lunchmeat "Is you child adpoted or is your husband a negro?"

I was asked in Walmart why 2 of my kids looked different then the " Black" one

Ok I just wanted to know .....

Some people think before they speak...or should just keep there mouth shut...

I'm not sure why total strangers think they have the right to ask some of the questions they do??? I would never ask anyone some of the questions I've been asked!

I'd say:

1st Lady: A little presumptuous and ignorant, but probably meant no harm. . .

2nd and 3rd "Ladies": Ignorant, rude, insensative and racist. . maybe not in a "I hate all minorities" type way, but still racist. . .

Hard to believe there are still people out there like that, but there they are. . :(

You just made me wonder what my friend goes through.. Besides the fact that she has 6 children, she has a "rainbow" in her house. There are 2 hispanics, 1 hispanic/white, 2 african american, and 1 filipino. Her and her husband are blond hair, blue eyed. Yes they are all adopted, and I am so glad that they adopted me as their Aunt.

I am glad to see that Iam not being over sensitive. I was offended and to be honest shocked .Thanks guys !

Man, that's dumb. I personally don't think it's racist to wonder how such a mixture came to be, but so many people are sensitive about that that I can't see why people wouldn't be a little more cautious. I surely wouldn't ask that of some random person in a store. Those people could all use a lesson in tact, for sure (if they were in fact trying to be friendly). I can only imagine how all this makes the kids feel.

I think they are thoughtless and racist unless clearly
charmed. But they didn't say,"what a beautiful child!",
did they?! geesh. sorry you even have to think about it.
mimi

Ignorance and stupidity never stops amazing me.

I always find it amazing how ignorant some people can be.

"How kind of you to adopt a child like that" How condescending. IMHO this was motivated by racism, why else would the comment have been phrased that way?

I can't believe how ignorant people are. It isn't any of their business

People really will say anything . A friend of mine said she was in a the store buying her son some ice cream . A man looked at her and said " You know you dont need that right ? cause you are already fat" She said she was shocked and didnt say anythign to him . I told her I would have chased him down with my cart and ran him over ! How rude !!

Ignorant and sometimes just downright rude. You should see the looks that my family gets when we all get together. For one thing, I am the oldest and 24 years older than my youngest brother so no one can figure out who goes with who. Then my youngest cousins are adopted. Andrew is as white bread as they come and Katie is bi-racial. Then my DSister's ex is Puerto Rican so my DNephew is a fair skinned hispanic while my SIL is Peruvian so my other DNephews are dark skinned with auburn hair (man are they gorgeous! :teeth: ) MY DD and my cousin Andrew look just alike even tho he is adopted so people think he is mine. My AUnt and Uncle are only ten years or less older than I am so people think we are siblings. It just goes on and on.:p Really, you just have to develop a sense of humor about the whole situation. The only thing I wan't stand is out and out racism, and I would address that faster than you could blink an eye!

some people still amaze me in what they say...these people just aren't really thinking before they speak

Lady #1 - trying to make brownie points with someone.....

The others, just clueless.

The best comeback answer for any of the "Why, what ever would make you ask as question or statement like that?" That will usually shut them up. And you are still being polite, while they should realize how rude they were.

As the only tall, blonde, blue eyed children of a long lineage of Italians, my sister and I can relate to the "who fathered them, the milkman?" comments.

I chalk it up to ignorance and bad manners.
