Racist,ignorant, or misunderstood? O'Reilly remarks

You claim that there are tons of people on these boards condemning Sharpton and Jackson for racist actions. My business doesn't let me get on these boards very often so I must have missed them.

The comment about folks 'not agreeing' refered to giving a 'pass' to some racists and not others. To me, a racist is a racist regardless of color; if you defend a racist, you are a racist.

If someone isn't trying to set up a "quid pro quo" over racism, why are Sharpton and Jackson brought up in a thread titled "
Racist, ignorant, or misunderstood? O'Reilly remarks "?

What is the point of talking about Sharpton and Jackson other than another attempt to deflect criticism of O'Reilly by pointing the fingers at Sharpton and Jackson? What difference does it possibly make in a thread about the "Loofah Lothario"?

And I'm not talking about Sharpton just as O'Reilly's dinner partner.

To get picky - I claimed there are tons of threads. But, yeah, in those threads you'll find lots of people condemning Sharpton. Do you honestly not believe me?

And I know I should let it go, but do you still believe that people think racism from Sharpton is good?

Again, who do you think is giving a pass to some racists? Who do you think disagrees with your statement that a racist is a racist regardless of color?

This thread was started because of the O'Reilly comment. After Imus's comment, threads were started because of him. True, there are comments on various threads about Sharpton, but I don't recall a specific thread about him. You claim there are tons and I don't get a chance to get on here on a daily basis.

Unfortunately, I do think that people (not all) will accept racism from Sharpton and not tolerate it from others. Anyone who promotes or defends racism disagrees with my original statement.

Holy Crap!!!  Now, that is racist IMO, calling another black person a "Tom" or "Uncle Tom" for taking up for a white man.....

Why in the world do you feel he speaks for YOU, b/c he is black?! The man seemed to be talking for himself.

Because that was the position he was taking, quoting Juan Williams et al and making it seem as if he was the spokesman for US.

As for the term, it's a kinder friendlier one than some of the terms I'd like to use for the talking heads that show up on these news programs.

Oh, ok, that makes it all better........

FTR, I know you would FREAK out if a WHITE person referred to a black person as a "Tom" or "Uncle Tom" on these boards. I find what you said incredibly offensive, even if you and the person you are disparaging are both black.

When a black person speaks on TV, like Al Sharpton, it is assumed by many that they are speaking for ALL black people. WHY? When black people hear O'Reilly, I hope they don't think he speaks for all white people!! :scared1:

I don't think Al or any other black person speaks for all black people any more than I would assume that any person of any race or religion is speaking for ALL members of that race or religion. They only speak for themselves and for those who have chosen to identify themselves with them.

No I would not, ftfr. Join the crowd, I see offending things on this board daily.

What??????

Common knowledge for who? People who have actually been to those locations? Or people who just know a bunch of Black people live there?

I'm going to try and restrain myself here. But, let me just say that I'm a White guy who has gone for many walks in Harlem. The trek from the subway to some softball fields I used to play on go right through the heart of Harlem. Never had a problem. So I suggest you think long and hard about what lead you to believe that its common knowledge that a white person cannot just go out for a walk there...

Maybe I shouldn't have included Harlem, b/c I have never been there, but it has just always been some form of "common knowledge". But, I have been to LA, and I have LIVED in New Orleans, and there ARE places where white people just don't go. :confused3 I have been with my (past) black boyfriend in some neighborhood's around Atlanta and he WOULD NOT let go of my hand, and we quickly went from car to house, w/o stopping. If I ever showed up after classes and he was in this other neighborhood, his cousins wouldn't let me go alone, and would go with me to see him. There were also plenty of all black neighborhoods that were perfectly safe, but my friends were scared to death to come with me. I'm not saying the WHOLE city is that way, I walk around the French Quarter in NO, with no problem. You just have to be aware of your surroundings. BUT, there are places around the 9th ward that I would NEVER even think about going too. Same thing with Compton, even though I have walked through LA. So, the whole city isn't bad persay, but there are places. They exist, and I know from experience that they do.

Anyways, I think I should stay out of this one, b/c I don't even watch the guys show. :confused3

I'm white. I've been in situations where everyone in a group of people was also white, and racist jokes or comments were made. On those occasions I've expressed my discomfort. And I've been told "why should you be offended - you arent (black, Jewish, Hispanic, gay, whatever the target group is)." And to that I've always said - "I'm offened because I'm a human being."

When I was in high school I lived in the North Ga mountains, ie, redneck country. In the back of the bus one morning there were these idiots talking about Tupac dying and saying, "another one bites the dust", saying the N word, just being incredibly racist, so I jumped up and said something about beating them with my baton (I was majorette that year) and after I sat down, I heard one whisper to the other, "Is she black?" (I have always been VERY pale) I hate it when other white people assume that you are as ignorant as they are.

Anyways, I'm leaving this one alone, have, fun, I guess......

How many threads have you started on Sharpton and/or Jackson?:confused3

WOW I don't see it daily. I must either be reading the wrong threads, a racist so it is normal for me or not reading enough into the threads that I read.

This is a prime example of what this thread is about. People not knowing what they just said as being Racist.

Do you have any idea of the ignorance in this post?

You can call them on it but they just don't see it that way.

I noticed you live in PA. My husbands whole family lives in PA. I have been to many places there, including Philly. I can tell you from extensive experience, that there is not one place in PA that is like New Orleans in terms of what I was talking about. You cannot just take what you have experienced and think the whole world is like that, or even everywhere in this country. Have you been to New Orleans. I'm not talking about vacation, in a hotel. I'm talking about lived there. Go to the Wal-Marts in the predominantly black neighborhoods there, and THEN go to the one's across the Ponchatrain and TELL ME you don't see a difference, and that if you had a choice, you wouldn't touch the former with a ten foot pole. :confused3 What I try to explain to my aunts is that just b/c that is the norm in LA, and in the South in general, it is NOT the norm in other parts of the country. I try to explain to them that it does NOT mean that black people are nasty and distructive. It has to do with being poor and uneducated. You can NOT ignore the fact that LA is an extremely poor state and that most black people who live there are in poverty and when you go to poverty stricken places, they are generally gross. It's the same way in North Ga. with white people. In Dahlonega, the wal-mart is nice and clean, in Cornelia, it's DISGUSTING, I wouldn't even pee there, but it was all WHITE people. The difference??? Cornelia is in a poorer county, the people there live in poverty and don't put a lot of importance on education. I have NO IDEA why these things contribute to dirty stores and crappy service, but to ignore the FACT that it is true, just b/c it isn't PC, is goofy. It was the same way in Hawaii, most native Hawaiians live in poverty, and areas like Waianae, where its predominantly native Hawaiian, were pretty gross. And it was COMMON KNOWLEDGE, as in, during our military inprocessing briefings, we were told that it wasn't a good idea to go there. White military men (Haoles) were frequently accosted by people there, so we stayed away.... this was not a figment of white people's imagination. But it also doesn't mean that ALL Hawaiians are mean and violent. We knew many hawaiians from our church, who explained to us why some of them don't like not only white people, but all people who were interfering with their traditional way of life. It all depends on where you live and what life is like there. Here on the outskirts of DC, I don't think twice about going to predominently black areas, as a matter of fact, I LOVE living here, b/c it is so diverse and you don't even notice the color of someone's skin. There are decent people and places, of all races, and there are crappy places and people, of all races. I know what I am, and what I believe in, and what I have seen and experienced, and the fact that you would call ME racist and ignorant, just shows how incredibly pointless it is to debate such things on here, b/c you can't see past the end of your nose. You belong to the group of people that thinks anyone, well, any white person anyway, who mentions or notices anything negative about any group of people is a racist. But yet, it's ok for any other race to say things about white people, or rednecks, or hillbillies. Which btw, having lived with rednecks for 10 years, I can always tell where they live and the places they frequent b/c they are usually gross too. Does that make me racist too? Ugh....ok, now I really am done with this thread........

Even if that were true, and I don't believe it is, what does Sharpton and Jackson have to do with a conversation about Bill O'Reilly if not to deflect from his statements? It's just like the obligatory Bill Clinton references every time GWB is discussed. When Al Sharpton makes a statement regarding Mr. O'Reilly's comments, then I can see him being drawn into the discussion. Again, jmho.

Exactly. This board is just too PC to admit there is a problem with rap/gang/drug violence in today’s black youth culture. Unfortunately, until you admit there is a problem you’ll never find a way to fix it.

With no disrespect, you (like many others) don't get it because you don't understand the differentiation between opinions and facts.

It's that simple.

Maybe liberals would get elected more often if they didn’t think they were so much smarter than everyone else.

Can you please try and break your post up? It's impossible to read. Nevermind I did it myself.

I have not lived in Pa for my entire life. I have live in Savannah,Ga. for 4 years . Beckley, West Virginia for 6.I went to school in Camden ,NJ. Ever been to Camden? Not what you would call a pretty place.

My point being that I don't have a limited view. I still think what you said in your first post is ignorant.

I guess we will agree to disagree.

Who do you think "accepts" racism from Sharpton but won't accept it from others? DIS posters? Do you think any of the go beyond "accepting" and actually think racism from Sharpton is a good thing?

I just think the world - especially the world of DIS posters - is better than that. Have I missed a bunch of posts where people claim to accept racism from Sharpton and even think it's good?

Exactly. This board is just too PC to admit there is a problem with rap/gang/drug violence in today’s black youth culture. Unfortunately, until you admit there is a problem you’ll never find a way to fix it.
What makes you think the board is "too PC" to admit it? WHo here do you think won'tl admit that there is a problem with gang/drug violence in today's black youth culture. There is also a problem with gang/drug violence in today's white youth culture. Not to mention black and white adult culture. You really think people won't admit it?

As for "rap" - it's a style of music, some good, some bad.

I live in suburban Boston. There are white neighborhoods in Boston with sky high heroin death rates in teens.

And it's not black kids holding up pharmacies to get oxycontin.
