So my Dr's office is closed for lunch and I am having a bit of a problem but not enough of one to go to the hospital, I'm not even worried just a bit annoyed.

My resting heart rate for the last 45 minutes has been over 100 (102-108) and I'm a little short of breath. I read somewhere that low electrolytes or low potassium could be the problem anyone heard this? I just want it to go away! I'll go get some gatorade and a banana  if it will fix it!

There are so many different things it could be,

1. Thyroid
2. Panic Attack
3. Blood Sugar
4. Somthing more serious.

If you are really short of breath I would go to the E.R.

Impossible to say. I've had tachycardia from a mitral valve prolapse. My heart rate been about 160. VERY scary. Try the banana!

Dehydration could cause it too, or various medications or caffiene or anxiety.

102-108 isn't all that high ... except for the shortness of breath with it. Definitely time to see someone about it. Any walk-in clinics in your area?

I'd rather just wait it out to be honest. Last time I called my dr.s office they told me to come in bcause I had a red line travelling up my hand from a bug bite. I got there and the dr said I didn't need to come in unless it was warm or painful! What a waste of time!

It could be anxiety, I never thought about that. I'll get a banana, if that doesn't work I'll call. ugh! I hate going there!!

Have you had much caffeine today? That will make my heart race (and my mouth too, I get really talkative when I have had too much caffeine). :bounce:

Yeah I finally am able to catch my breath and it's about 96bpm right now. I'm feeling a mirgaine coming on though. It's been a weird day!

Thanks everyone :grouphug:

I have been having the same racing heart beat today and I cannot catch my breath. This is very strange since I am on Toprol which slows it down. I think it is from caffine. I ate a small but very, very chocolate ganache cake today.

I will tell you that I have reflux and if I were to eat something like "very chocolate ganache cake" it would make my heart race. My GI doctor told me that acid reflux can stimulate some cardiac nerves (vagus nerves) that run through the esophageal area and cause racing heart, palpitations etc.

Preshi--most often rapid heart rate is a harmless condition and can be caused by many things stated here or just be that way for no apparent reason. If you have several episodes of it then it is probably a good idea to go in. Also, did you know that "resting" heart rate truly means "at rest." The resting heart rate should be taken as soon as you awaken and before you even get out of bed. The normal resting heart rate is 60-100bpm. So, while you were on the high end, you were still in the normal range. But my guess is that you were also not truly resting?? Sitting at your desk, sitting around the house, maybe?

how strange that so many of us are having the same problem. I couldn't get through to my Docs so I went to a friend that is a nurse. My heart beat was racing. Far too much caffiene lately. I was feeling better so I took a drink of pop and I'm right back to where I was.

I hope yours stay slow. Its scary when it happens.

My heart races when I'm dehydrated and/or anemic. I get irregular heartbeats when my potassium is low. Nothing a banana or two can't cure.

I had a nuclear stress trest and everything seems fine, for now.

This is true, I was sitting at my desk. I hadn't really move in an hour and normally my heart rate is about 75-80 (sitting here) so I could tell something was a bit off. :) I'm watching my caffiene intake the enxt couple of days... that was NOT fun!

That happens to me also. I went to the ER 2 months ago because my heart wouldn't stop racing. It was 133 bpm when I got there. I think i drank to much tea or had an anxiety attack. the doctor said it was stress. I was mad at myself for going there and wasting $150 for my copay!! I dwell on it to much when it happens which makes it worse. I think I just get anxiety attacks.
