Racial Slur at school....

Suspension. It happened last week. 2 days. And his mother is transferring him to Catholic School next year as punishment. *which I find pretty funny since I went to 16 years of Catholic School. Oh and these are 7th graders.

In my school you can do just about anything and you get lunch detention.

We do have one of the best suspension rates in the district though. :sad2:

I homeschool, but I would hope absolutely none.

I hope I am misreading this response. I am not lobbying for 20 lashes but I think some sort of appropriate punishment would be in order with a sincere apology. i.e, if this was a first time event, I would think that an essay on the power of words may be in order. For a repeat offender, perhaps a more serious punishment would be needed; not suspension (I always thought that was a reward for bad behavior) but after school detention or the loss of priviledges.

Usually, nothing happens. If a teacher hears them, the teacher might get after them, but chances are slim to none that any actual punishment would take place.

Well, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt on this and interpret your statement to mean "I homeschool and I would hope we would have absolutely no racial slurs in my home." Have I got it right?

Detention, or in-house suspension.

Not even a reprimand. I never once said I thought they were fine and good. But nice to try and put words into my mouth.

Ok. What about the rest of my question?

And, then, do you not think schools should discipline or reprimand children at all? If a teacher heard a student call another student the n word, she should just ignore it?

Since the school can't teach morality I think detention is appropriate for making someone else feel threatened. It isn't illegal to think or believe stupid things, but it is illegal to harass other people and for that reason it must be addressed.

BTW, I happen to think this should be enforced whether the slur was racial or something else. ANY term meant to dehumanize should be treated as equally offensive to ALL of us, not just the group being marginalized.

Wait - what? You hope there would be no punishment for one kid using a racial slur against another in school? :confused3

Yes I am saying that.

:scared1:

Do you (testifyoncruises) not realize that this behavior is not acceptable and that it can be the trigger for violence within schools?

In our school, this warrants 5 demerits, which is an automatic 2-day suspension. We have a demerit system, where when a student gains so many demerits, there is a series of consequences.

what would the punishment be at your school?

This is from 1 kid to another kid.

i would hope suspension.

when i was taking a few college courses a few years ago, there was a grown adult woman who made a racial slur to another grown adult woman, and NOTHING got done about it, except a statement was made. i couldn't believe it!!

Catholic school was pretty horrible for me. i went for 7 years and finally i transferred to a public school and i excelled there. the teachers even were better with 1 on 1 in the public school.
