Racial Discrimination? More blatant examples? More subtle?

I'm sad that this discussion has turned so. Mods, I think its time to shut this one down... :sad1:

Then there is the case of the New Haven firefighters, who despite excelling in the written exam, were not given the promotions that they were entitled to, because not enough 'non whites' did well. They prevailed in court. I don't like the term "reverse discrimination". All discrimination is wrong.

I agree with this. Discrimination doesn't mean disliking or prejudging someone because they are part of a minority group, it means if they are part of ANY group. It's all discrimination.

I can't come up with anything, unfortunately.

I love this explanation. So many people tend to forget this. I'm sure members of all groups have been discriminated against at some point, just as members of all groups have been guilty of discriminating. It isn't a problem that is exclusive to any one group.

Okay, I just read the whole thread, and why does it need to be shut down according to some people? There is debate about the topic, but it's all pretty respectful, I don't see any name calling, or disrespecting their beleifs. It looks fine to me, and it's a good topic to debate about.

I think there is huge problem in the country with people confusing racism with victimhood

you know, i never thought id say this but working for Disneyland has actually turned me pretty racist.

Each ethnicity group has their ups and downs based on common things that i see happening...

I would explain it more into detail if anyone is interested.

More proof that we cannot talk about race in this country.

It is quite common for people to say that we need to talk about race in order to get beyond it. But when people talk someone always gets offended.

Every culture has their idiosyncrasies that other cultures might find odd or even offensive. I assure you that people see Americans in a certain negative light, too.

That's normal and expected.

For example.. I don't like the forwardness of Latin men. It makes me uncomfortable.

I'm half-Korean, but when I go to the Asian market, I always get run over by these very aggressive Asian mamas. Even my full-blooded Korean mom used to get really aggravated when she would go. She had been in the US for so long, that she forgets how it is to live in a city/country populated like sardines. The difference between she and I is that she'd turn around and curse them in Korean. :lmao: I don't speak Korean, but I know when she's cussin'.

I have seen the conditions in Africa. I have seen what happens to black people under black rule.
And what about what happened to black people in South Africa under white rule? Or what happened to white Jews, Catholics, Romani, etc. under white Nazi rule? Despots come in all colors.

I'm sure it would be quite helpful for Dawn's son's research paper.

I have no problems discussing race, and in fact I think it is very appropriate to do so. When confronting sensitive topics however, it is important to maintain an open mind, being open to different perspectives. I never expect people to change their views to match mine, just as I would never have that expectation of another person. I recognize that there will be racist people as there has been in the past and will always be in the future. The line is drawn when the discussion is no longer such, and people begin attacking each other. I do not believe the DIS boards are the appropriate forum for attacks against a specific group of people (with regards to race, religion, politics, etc.). Once it escalates, sometimes it is necessary to deescalate, and in this forum I believe it seemed appropriate to close the thread. I hope those that have participated continue to be open to the viewpoints of others, that is how change happens... But when people begin spewing hatred, all open communication suffers.

You are not treated badly. You are pandered to. God help anybody who steps on the tender tootsies of anybody black in this country. As has already been said here black people demand a very unequal equality and overwhelmingly get it.

For the record I don't want to rule over black people who I think ought to step up and take responsibility for yourselves instead of insisting upon the right to be victims without having to tolerate any actual oppression. I don't want to live anywhere near you.

Holy cow, hopefully this type of ignorance will eventually be in the past. I have to say kids these days are so less aware of race than ever before so there's hope for the next generation.

I've been sitting on this information for a few days and I think it is fair to share.

As for examples of racism, I have encountered so much racism being the only white woman in a predominately African American work place. I have been called by my former principal "the white girl" and many many derogatory comments. I have been told to go back to the suburbs and leave my students alone. My parents were well very condescending to me because I was the white lady.

im white my girlfriend is black we get looks from white women alot of the time, one middle aged women was staring at us in disgust i stared straight back with more disgust!:thumbsup2

i would like to thank metsfan and okiedokie for changing their quotes to reflect who really said what was quoted. :thumbsup2

I have been around the U.S.A. while working for a mobile nursing agency. I have lived in quite a few countries because my grandparents were diplomats. My grandparents raised me after my mother died so I moved around with them.

I was preteen at the time, but I was there when the U.S. Embassy was bombed in Kenya. The marine escorting us to the airport after westerners were advised to leave said that the scene we encountered there was like the fall of Saigon. The natives there were banging on the car and trying to get in because it was never white people that they were afraid of even though they did not want to talk about any problem that they could not find a way to blame white people for.

I have seen the conditions in Africa. I have seen what happens to black people under black rule. It makes the U.S. look like heaven to them. I have been begged by the parents of children I played with in Ethiopia to help them get into the U.S. or Europe because my father is American and my mother was European. I was a child so I had no power, but adults I considered authority figures because they were adults would plead and cry to get me to get them into a white nation and away from those ruled by their own race.

The same thing goes on in the United States. Moving around this country to nurse has shown me plenty of examples of people who want to blame white people for all of their problems but still want to live among white people. Shouldn't they love segregation so that white people aren't around to do all of the evil things that they say that we do? They don't because they know that these things are not true.

That must have been beyond terrifying, facing death. I don't know anyone that has had that type of experience, but I have read accounts of similar incidences in Africa. I'm sure you see the world through the experiences you have had, as we all do.

I think race relations are a real conundrum. There are inequities and unbalance in many areas which are not isolated to any one race or group.

I cannot quite believe that this was posted. I'm disgusted by these sentiments.
