Go WISH Team!

Come back and share your experience with us. I can't wait to read all about it!

Mousedogmom(Jackie) How was the race? Did you see a big group of Campbell U students there? I haven't heard from my daughter how it went...her first race.

Joan - I think I saw students from everywhere BUT Campbell! I felt pretty old - tons of high school and college kids, and the occasional post-college adult trying to act young!

Judy - We actually could have brought back a couple more dozen, but the idea of carrying a dozen doughnuts for 2 miles just didn't seem like a lot of fun. But I saw plenty of people doing it! I know Jeanne and Wendy did last year, and Jeanne told me to bring a bag this year, but I opted to run light.

What an experience! There are tons of photos online:

There's no other way to describe the variety of costumed runners than to see it firsthand. 5200 runners ($35,000 raised for the UNC Children's Hospital) - the scene at Krispy Kreme was pure pandemonium. I started with DD18 and her best friend, but they quickly left me when I switched to R/W. They said they ran the entire 2 miles to KK, but I was only a little over 2:00 behind them arriving there. We split a dozen donuts, so we only ate 4 each, then started back. I won't go into details, but there was a lot of dodging on the return route... I continued R/W intervals on the way back, and about halfway back caught up to DD and friend. As I passed them I made a comment about "the old woman isn't in such bad shape after all," which sent them into an all-out sprint. After that, they made sure they were in front of me at all times, but they only finished 43 seconds ahead of me! The actual Krispy Kreme Challenge is to run the 4 miles and eat a full dozen and still finish in under an hour. My chip time was 1:01:51, which I was quite proud of considering I wasn't even trying and I took my time at KK and leisurely ate my 4 little donuts! And there was a complete logjam at the finish line - they funneled us into a chute of sorts before we ever reached the timing mat, and we had to slow down and wait to cross the mat. I'm pretty sure everyone lost at least a minute there.

Either way, it was a GREAT experience. Don't know that I'll try a repeat, since this race gets bigger every year. So far it's been run by a group of college kids, and only this year did they bring in official race organizers for any help. They ran out of water at the end, and had very few portapotties, so as far as organization goes, it's very low on the list, but it's not a race you do for quality of event!

Wow the KK challenge sounds like fun but I don't think I could do it - I can't stand KK donuts or most donuts in general. But it does sound like a lot of fun to do.

As for me I had the best race of my life!!! I PR'd and PB'd if there is even a difference - I finished the 5k in 30:42 (before I never was faster than 33 minutes) and so my pace time was something like 9:54 per mile (never ever have I had an official pace time faster than 11 minutes before)

The race was put on by my running group in Boca Raton and was on A1A on what had been my marathon training route - so I knew the route well and missed running it since I last ran over there in Nov. Had to leave the house around 6:45AM - "forced" my DH to wake up to go with me. The race was starting at 7:30 so I wanted to get there around 7AM since I had to pick up my race shirt, ankle chip, bib and then still have enough time to put the stuff in the truck and pin my number on. Shortly after we walked over to the start line. I saw a few people I had done marathon training with and talked with them and moved up a bit closer to the start line. I had planned on running the entire race since I have NEVER ran a 5k race without doing some walking. I figured since I ran 8 miles in the marathon before stopping to walk I knew I could do 3 miles. So the gun went off (and a bunch of people screamed!!) and we were off. Heading south and feeling good. I stuck with my pace and stayed steady. Went past the 1 mile mark and I hear 9:40 called out - I knew I was doing good. A little past there was the water stop. Since I didn't bring anything with me to drink I knew I would stop at the water stop. So I got my cup and slowed to a walk to drink 2 sips and then I was back to running. Still felt good at the turnaround - was excited seeing how many people were still behind me. As I passed the water stop again I slowed to a walk to take 2 sips and back to running. Coming up to mile 2 I kept my head down and focused and got into my groove. I heard 19 minutes as I went past mile 2 and I knew I would be able to PR if I didn't stop to walk anymore. So I held on and kept going. We then turned to go into the park that the race finished in - since I did this race last year I knew how long it takes to get from there to the finish line since you have to go around a bunch of curves it gets a little tiring and seems ALOT longer then it really is - went past mile 3 and heard the time called at as 29 minutes. I came around the corner to the finish line and saw 30 minutes - I was estatic and crossed before 31 minutes. I had to take a breather before I took my ankle chip off because I felt nausous again after. I tried working on my breathing and it must have worked because I felt better after that. My DH got my picture as I flew past. I got a brownie and an orange and we were on our way home.

So I am not actually doing long runs like I should be to get ready for the Princess 1/2 but at least I am getting in what I feel is quality runs so I guess its all good!!!

Congrats to all who had races this weekend.

Great job WISHers!

Jackie--not sure i could eat 4 donuts in the middle of a race! Good for you for eating those donuts and finishing in a great time!!

Tricia--Great job on your PR! Sounds like it was a great race as well!

Jackie That sounds like a fun race that may need some fine-tuning. Glad you had a good time though.

Tricia Way to go!! That's the way the Triple D's do it. We go out there, prepare and have the best race of your life. Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!

I just ran the 44th Annual Trinidad to Clam Beach run yesterday. It was a blast and a much different experience than any other race I've run.

I just started running as a hobby (okay, mid-life crisis) around the time of the race last year. Everyone talked about how much rain we had and how there was such a small turnout last year.

This year couldn't have been more perfect for my first stab at this race. It rained Friday, was sunny with a cool breeze for race day, and rained today so we really lucked out. We had ~1200 racers in all.

I ran the 8.75-mile but they also offered a 5.75M and 3M. The race began three miles north of the beautiful small coastal town of Trinidad, CA. The majority of the first five miles were running through the hilly, windy roads through the trees and overlooking the georgous rocky coast.

The part that was new to me was when we arrived at the beach and had to cross "Little River" which opens into the Pacific. It was only around 2' deep but rushing pretty quickly. They had a rope going across for us to hold as well as several coast guard officers there to offer assistance and make sure we didn't get swept away!

The final two miles were through the sand which was extremely hard for me as I've never run on sand. I stayed as close to the water as possible on the hard, packed sand but it was still really difficult. I had to take a few walk breaks to catch my breath.

I was shooting for a 9:00 pace but ended up finishing 9:34 which I wasn't too disappointed with as I had to run so much on sand. It also took me almost two minutes to break ahead of the pack of walkers. My official chip time was 1:23:45. What are the odds of 12345?

I sure am sore today though. I have been training a lot for hills on my treadmill but I don't have a way to duplicate the downhills.

Great job on the race Steve - that sounds like a fun run. The water part sounds really cool. And awesome time - that is so cool - 12345

Jackie: Congratulations on the KK race. It actually does sound like a lot of fun, if one's stomach can handle the donuts. I think you did a great job, and especially loved how you spurred you your DD and DD's friend to keep ahead of you.... Nothing like a little friendly generational competition to bring out the best in one's kids, huh? :lmao:

Tricia: Congrats on your PR and PB! Great news and a great pace, too. I really like your how your description shows how the clock can be a motivating factor--in a good way! Quality runs all the way, baby! (P.S. Donuts aren't for you, but brownies are? You're a woman after my own chocolate-loving heart.)

Steve: Your race route sounds beautiful and I like the idea of crossing a "little river"--that and the sand makes the whole thing sound like an extreme running race. Congrats on your strong finish--you've earned the right to be sore!
