Race Reports, Kudos, and Encouragement for Nov 17th and 18th

HI ----

My husband is at the cold Philadelphia Marathon today --- just got the email from PhillyMarathon that he completed the marathon in 4 hours and 23 minutes. (LOVED TODAY'S TECHONOLOGY!!!!!!!). Glad he did it. In his training he only achieved the highest of 18 miles so I was very concerned for him this morning.

My daughter yesterday morning, ran the Turkey Trot with all the entire "Girls on the Run" clubs. It was so beautiful seeing all those young girls running.

Have a good running day!!!

Congratulations to:

Kristin
Renee
Vic
Wendy
SeeDisney's DD and DH

Way to go! :thumbsup2

Report Report

Well, after weeks of training I finally got my chance to run a marathon. The good news is I FINISHED!!!!

The time was okay...around 4:35 (unofficial). Hey, I beat Katie Holmes' time and I don't have a personal trainer. I guess that's not bad for being a first marathon. The weather was not too bad at the start (41 and foggy) but it got colder and rainier throughout the race. The rain was just a steady drizzle but it got worse as the race went on and it got colder.

Physically my knees and feet felt good and I never got tired or stopped running (except to drink water/Gatorade). However, I had a groin pull (sorry for the details) at Mile 5 which scared me. This happened on my 20-mile LR 3 weeks ago and really killed. I really changed my approach at this point.

Basically, from Mile 5 on I decided to put my ego in check and focus on finishing. The bottom line I really respected this race. I didn't let the throngs of people passing me get to me. Instead I went from a 9-mile pace to a comfortable 10-11-mile pace and just kept moving forward. I figured as long as I didn't lose my balance or trip I would finish. And I did finish.

The race was a great experience. Philadelphia is my city so it was very nice to go past places where I have so MANY memories (Center City, Old City, South Street, Drexel Univ, Zoo, Fairmount Park, Kelly Dr, Manayunk, and the Art Museum) as I ran. One of my favorite parts of the race was running down Main Street in Manayunk. Thousands of people were partying on along the course. There was even a beer stand when we entered Main Street. No, I didn't drink. However, the LeBus brownies were clutch!

Actually, the best part was approaching the finish line and seeing my family in the stands. The kids had a huge GO DAD! sign and my wife was video taping. Crossing the finish line was great and emotional.

I actually feel pretty good right now. Still have some pain do to the pulled muscle but I'll live. I'll post pics of the race tomorrow along with some more details. I'm going to watch some football now.

Fantastic job, Lou !!:woohoo: Wow, cold, rain AND a pulled muscle all in your first full!! :scared1: So glad that you were able to rein in your ego and do what you needed to to to finish. And still with a GREAT time!! :cool1:

SeeDisney kudos to your running family!

Kristen--WTG on your 13k!!

Vic--WTG on your half marathon! Sounds like a fun race, especially since it is a smaller race!

Renee--Great job on your half! I love the fact that you decided on a whim to go do a half marathon!! I am not sure I could ever do that! And to get a PR on top of that!! AWESOME!! Keep up the good work!

Wendy--WTG on your race!! That is great that the Race director worked with you so you could walk the race. Sounds like a beautiful race course! I need to try to do a trail run.

SeeDisney--Congrats to your DH and DD on their races this weekend!

Lou--Great job on your first marathon! And a respectable time at that! WTG for listening to your body and slowing down so you could finish the race. I know that is hard, but it is for the best!!

Congratulations Lou! :thumbsup2

Tremendous effort on your marathon! I look forward to the race photos.

Congrats Renee, Vic, Wendy, Kristin and Lou. The races sound great and glad you had a good time during them. Sorry about the muscle problems in the marathon Lou, glad you were able to get through it.

Way to go Lou! I'm glad you did the sensible thing and settled into a pace that you could live with. Great job.

Wendy - It's nice you found a race director that was so understanding. Here, I thought they were all barbarians since EVERY race finishes with a big uphill! Congrats again.

SeeDisney's Family - Good job. I hope everyone had fun!

Lou - WTG! That is a wonderful time for any marathon! Congrats and :wizard: for your ****oo!;) My DH did that same thing 3 weeks b/4 his 1st WDW maraton. Pain!

Wendy - WTG! Girl! You rock!

GREAT JOB AND CONGRATS to everyone.

LOU...fantastic effort! You have to be proud of that marathon :). Especially considering the injury that you dealt with! Awesome job!

I love being able to come to the race reports thread and read about everyone's experiences!

WAY TO GO WISH Team!

:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Lou, Congrats on the first mararthon! You did great!

Wendy, I think that is fantastic that you were given the opportunity to play! And you finished I'm sure in fine WISH Team spirit!

Kristin, Renee, Vic, SeeDisney family (DD and DH). I'm happy you did well and thanks for posting your info.

Lou - :thumbsup2 WTG on that marathon, what an excellent first-time time! And with heinous conditions & a pulled groin. It's tough letting go of the ego-thing, but I'm convinced that this is what allowed you to actually enjoy the race instead of it all getting too ugly. GOOD FOR YOU, DUDE:yay:

Thanks for the kind words everyone. 24 hours later I feel pretty good. Sleeping last night was rough but I feel great now. Having that medal takes a lot of the pain away.

Now I can focus on Disney. Rather then worry about the distance I can start thinking of what I need to do to get in better shape by January. I think I am going to try yoga to increase my flexibility because I was too tight yesterday.

congrats, Lou!! I am sure we saw you - we were in Manayunk past the turn around and the water stop. Those race conditions were ugly! Your time is awesome! Bask in the glory, buddy!

Congratulations to all our teammates who raced this weekend! Awesome!!! So proud of all of you! :grouphug:

Manayunk was awesome. It was so nice to run down Main Street with all of the people cheering us on. It made those tough miles (18, 19, 20, 21, 22) a lot easier.

There were these people as soon as we entered Manayunk giving out beer! As tempting as it was I passed because a Dixie cup of beer would have knicked me out at that point of the race.

I did the Tulsa Route 66 Half Marathon yesterday and I thoroughly enjoyed the race! The weather was overcast and cool. Perfect! There were several bands that played music along the route. I counted 7 for the half-marathon course. It was great! The event included races for a quarter-marathon, half-marathon, marathon and marathon relay. DH, Steve, walked the quarter marathon in a 13:15 pace. He's training for the Half at WDW in '08. :cool1:

Several local restaurants, including Panera Bread, Hooters, Pizza Hut and several others, provided the food at the end of the race and, of course, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to indulge. I don't think I lost a bit of weight yesterday. Oh, did I mention the free beer? Needless to say, that was a popular tent. Oh, and yes, there was another band playing for us at the end.

I highly recommend this event!

ETA: After the race and all the food, I went back to the hotel and ran on the treadmill for another 3 miles. I hope this can count as my 16-mile training run for the full in January.

Susie - Congratulations to you and DH. I'm so glad you enjoyed the race. That's some kind of crazy doing the extra 3 on the TM after all the fun and festivities. You get bonus miles for that.

Susie, any race on Route 66 sounds like a good time to me. Glad you enjoyed it -- and congratulations!
