Race Reports, Kudos, and Encouragement for Dec 1st and 2nd

Smileyk8, Congratulations! on finishing your first event! Way cool. I love the pics. So many Santas!

Susie, I am glad you got your certificate. You both must have been doing a pretty good pace in order to slow down so and still get those certificates. You are such a good running buddy. I'd like to do the half there sometime. We've relatives nearby and I could get in a visit too.

Jackie, great race. I'm wondering if I cand get DS to do this one with me. I'm sure he'l love it.

Congratulations to Kate, Susie and Vic on your race performances this weekend!

Plus a special congrats to Jackie for her PR and because she's practically my neighbor and I finally got to meet her!

I did the Run for Victory Junction with my hubby, Wendy, Pat, Renee (finally got to meet her also!) Kathy, Lynn and Beth. Of course, Renee, Lynn and Beth were probably finished before we walkers made the halfway turn, but it was a great event for all. If I did not get a PR, I came pretty close to it. We were only chip timed at the finish and so no one got a net time. My clock time was 3:03:xx, but we started at the very back of the pack. Everybody connected with the race was so, so nice. As Jackie mentioned, we each got personally high-5'd at the end by Kyle(?) and Patti Penny (someone told me the guy was John Bingham and I posted that on the Walkers thread) After the race Richard Petty graciously signed autographs and posed for photos. I am not a NASCAR fan, but if you are, this is definitely the race for you.

Cool, cool, cool!

I'm there next year. :)

I am just getting here (sorry!) for a race report on the Victory Junction run yesterday. Work is extremely busy since my partner (PaDisneyFan) is on vacation (again!) in DW.

I did get to my fund raising goal (goal was $1,045 and I reached $1,130), so I got to have dinner with my family at Petty Enterprises. It was really nice. The Penguin, Kyle, Patty, and Richard Petty were all in attendance for dinner.
We got a really nice tour of the buildings first, with a lot of NASCAR questions answered. Dinner was catered by Carrabas (sp?) and was chicken parmesean with a side of pasta. Very race friendly. They said last year that the dinner was all fried Southern food which WASN'T race friendly!

Speeches given by the Penguin (John Bingman), Patty, and Kyle Petty which were very thought-provoking! So much good is coming from Victory Junction......it's much more to these kids than just a camp. I felt really good doing something to be a part of this!

The goody bag was also full of some great stuff!

The race was difficult. The course was more hilly than I am used to! I trained for my marathon in September with distance and no hills, because Toronto was flat. Well, this course was the complete opposite! The hills killed my quads! But, the volunteers were awesome and very supportive. The camp was also wonderful, and it made the 13.1 miles worth it! I really liked meeting our WISH team, and they all did a fantastic job! Sorry Jeanne, but I only came in 25 minutes before you!!!! You were FLYING! I could never complete 13.1 miles in your time. I can't walk that fast.

Good job everyone on all the races you have completed......remarkable!

Beth

I'm so impressed with all these race reports, not only are we a caring board (as demonstrated by susie) we're also an amazingly supportive and pro-active lot (great fundraising beth!). Beth i'm loving the whole goody bag thing- it's like getting a present after all your hard work.

jeanneg, beth, susie and jackie you're all so inspiring to me and i'm sure many others on here. :wizard:

Also great to hear about wish teams coming together at the events- can't wait to see people in may!

The Run to Victory (formerly the Victory Junction Run) WISH meet was an astounding success! You've already read the reports. I just wanted to share a few photos.

First, though, I need to thank Lynne (xterratri) and Kathy (NYcpa) for getting me in gear and signed up for this event. I was going to blow it off this year because I had a very busy November, but the prospect of a WISH meet in my own backyard was too good to pass up. When Pat (WDWFAN9) signed on as well, and entrusted me to show her a weekend full of NC, I was hopelessly hooked. It was an awesome weekend and I hope the tradition continues with a growing cast of WISHers every year.

I picked up Pat at the airport on Friday and whisked her off to Winston Salem. We started her intro to NC with a visit to Old Salem and their Christmas music celebration. We strolled the streets, visited the bakery (gotta love those Moravian ginger cookies), had a nice lunch at the Salem Tavern, listened to performances by various musical groups, and learned a little history from the docents. Then it was off to the race hotel to meet Jeanne and her DH for a entertaining pre-race dinner before crashing before our big day.

Race day threatened rain, according to the forecast, but instead it was nippy and overcast. Others have already described the race itself far better than I could -- especially since they changed the course this year, so you can throw everything I said about last year right out the window! Here are some photos.

After the NASCAR-style worship service (which I loved -- and which moved me to tears many times), I snagged some celebrity photos of Pat and the NASCAR royalty.

After a couple or three hills (I might have lost count), we see the hot air balloon that marks the entrance to the Victory Junction Gang Camp.

I have to get at least one photo to prove I'm there.

So Pat and I grab some food and the shuttle back to my car, then it's off to Biltmore Candlelight Evening -- a glorious Christmas celebration at America's largest private home. Who knew there were so many stairs at Biltmore?!?!?!? After an audio tour of the house in its Christmas finery and a short ride to our night's hotel, we collapse from a long but satisfying day. This morning, Pat and I took a quick drive through the grounds just to get a daytime shot of the estate and Pat was so tired she literally couldn't keep her eyes open -- and I have the photo to prove it.

This afternoon, I left her at the aiport and returned to my mundane existence awaiting my next visit with the WISH team in January. Great job, everyone! Thanks so much for visiting -- and y'all come back now, hear?

Ok Wendy, you officially had to much fun! That will be absolutely enough of that. And you had to drag those other innocent WISHers into your shamefully gleefull adventure.

Envious Panda:hippie:

Good luck everyone!

Ran the Jingle Bell 5K this morning. <snip> I actually ran some decent times (well decent for me). 9:49, 9:52, 11:24, and 9:32, giving me an pace of 10:18. Finish time was 33:14.

Go, Vic! Good for you!!! Hey, they served chili, hot chocolate, and loads of fresh fruit at the Run to Victory. That post-run chili is the best!

I ended up racing a 10K this morning. <snip> We started in downtown Ft Myers, ran for about 1 mile then up over the bridge and across the river. These are big bridges!

Duane, you are the man! I am no bridge runner, but I admire those that do them! Congrats!

I did the Memphis St. Jude half-marathon yesterday. I LOVED this race. This was a benefit weekend for the St. Jude Children's Hospital. So many staffers from the hospital cheered us on throughout the race. It was really nice.

I have heard nothing but good things about this race and it is on my list of races to do. Now, of course, I have a streak to contend with -- I've done every Victory Junction Gang Camp run -- all TWO of them. Hummmm... Wonder if I could drive from Memphis to High Point NC and do both races....

Seriously, congratulations on a good run for a great cause! :thumbsup2

Wendy - Awesome report, and great pics! :thumbsup2

I'm there next year! God willing and the creek don't rise. :)

Another Run to Victory participant chiming in ...

A really well run race with lots of volunteers along the course and a great group of WISHers! It was so nice to be able to translate "virtual friends" into "real friends"! I got to Randleman at around 8:15 and ran into Jackie at the sign in. After that I went over to the worship sevice and sat with Wendy, Pat, Jackie, Kathy and Lynn. It was a nice service and a kept me from getting too nervous before the race. After a bathroom stop I had to run over to the start line where I found my WISHers, we snapped a quick photo and were off! I was pretty far back but wasn't worried until I discovered that there were no chip mats at the start - only at the finish. (This is a pet peeve of mine. A chip timed race should mean mats at the start and the finish. That's my only grip with this race.)

I ran the first few minutes with Jackie (the 5 mile course and the half were the same for the first couple miles) until she took her first walk break. Along the first bit of the course I saw another WISH shirt and met Beth quickly.

The course was back country NC roads -- and boy was it hilly! Not a lot of steep hills, but I don't really remember any flat sections. Also, some of it was a bit banked so I did some running on the shoulder to try to save my hip from injury. I felt pretty good during the whole thing -- but the hills started really getting to me around mile 10 on.

My spoken goal for this race was to run slow -- around a 10 minute pace -- because I'd like to be able to do that comfortably for the marathon. The evil competitor in me wanted to at least beat my last half time (2:03) and get under 2:00. Well I blew both goals, coming in at a "chip" time of 2:02 and a watch time of 2:01. I was fine with it, since I felt pretty good the whole race.

I didn't stick around too long afterward because I got really really COLD!! (That happens to me after I run.) I saw Lynn in the cafeteria and then saw Beth running in, but after that I bugged out and drove back home.

If you are a NASCAR fan then you really should do this race. If you like to run hills you should do this race! After two hilly halfs, I think I'm in the market for some nice, flat courses!

Renee

Just a quick note for Wendy.....
Goody bag was a sling bag with Run to Victory symbol on the front
Petty Enterprises hat (which we got signed by Kyle and Richard)
Marathoning for Mortals book signed by the Penguin and Jenny
Christmas ornament with Victory Juntion on it
carabeener (sp?) clipped on bag with a Run to Victory running hat
signed by Kyle and Richard Petty
a matchbox car with Victory Junction on it
a Victory Junction pencil bag

It was a great experience.....we will probably do it again, but I will start fund raising earlier next year!

Beth

Thanks, Beth! I was curious about whether they'd changed up the goodies or not this year -- and they definitely did. (I don't even know what a carabeener is!)

I'll likely try to fundraise again next year as well. I just couldn't go back to the same folks two years in a row asking for money -- gotta give 'em a rest every once in a while. ;)

You did a great job, though, and I'm so glad it worked out! Congratulations again!

Did the Tucson Marathon on Dec 2. The course was advertised as downhill, but there were definitely some hills out there. The first couple of miles were in the Coronado National Forest with some gently rolling hills. Then, there were hills on the out-and-back to the biosphere from miles 10-13. They also threw a long, gradual hill at us for miles 20-22. Pretty much the rest of it was all downhill. Net decrease in elevation of about 1800 feet over the marathon distance.

I was moving along pretty well, on pace for a sub 4:30 finish when I developed a blister on my left big toe. At mile 21 the blister decided that would be a good time to rupture  . I was nowhere near an aid station, so I had to sit on the shoulder of the road, take off my shoe and sock, and treat my injury. That took about 5 minutes, but my legs already decided I was done running. So I was a lot slower for the last 5 miles. Still PR'd for the distance despite the injury. Official time 4:45:05.

Best part is that 2 days later, my legs feel good and I am really not sore at all.

Here are the official split times and results:
Place Overall: 861 out of 1027
Men: 529 out of 624
M 30-34: 47 out of 52
AgeGrade: 44.07% Place: 950
FINISH: 4:45:05 pace: 10:53
6.1 Mile: 56:20 pace: 9:15
13.7 Mile: 2:14:32 pace: 9:50
19.3 Mile: 3:11:59 pace: 9:57

Paul

Congratulations, Paul, on going the distance despite your blister! Sounds like you trained well if you feel good after a full!
