I did the March Of Dimes walk this morning in Fort Lauderdale on the Beach. In support of helping babies!!

Parked at the Galleria Mall. There were shuttles set up to take people back and forth from there to Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, the place where the festivities were taking place. We decided to walk over as the weather was nice and was VERY breezy. Got to the registration area and registered and handed in all the teams paperwork. I was on my friend/coworkers team walking in honor of her twins which were both 12 weeks early. One only lived for 12 hours, but the other is healthy and happy!!
Had food set up before the walk in large quantities. We got set up and then off for the walk. Started inside the park and then out onto A1A or the old "strip" heading south, then came around onto Las Olas Boulevard and back North on A1A and then back into the park. Nice easy stroll as this was not a timed thing. Was advertised as 6 miles, but according to Garmi was only 5, not sure what happened there. The event then offered food for everyone. Chicken sandwiches or hotdogs, chips, drinks, water, etc.
Had a good time and was a Great Cause!!
Of course I can not do a race report without photos....

Getting the Troops together to head over to the park.

WISH went to CMH/M and WISH finished CMH/M!! :cool1:

We were warned about the hills and tried to train for them..but.....every mile had inclines. Of course, the near record heat didn't help, either. There was a lot of support for the first 6 miles of the half..kindof dwindled after that. Of course, I fell at mile 6..my own fault..trying to take pictures walking backwards..:sad2: so that may be why I didn't notice much support! There was a great group around mile 11 with cute Minnie Mouse signs and balloons saying, "Not Minnie miles to go!" :cheer2:

Being a back of the packer in corral 29..we crossed the start at 8:01. The winner of the half crossed the finish line at 8:10!!! We weren't even to our first mile!! We saw a solo girl doing the race hula hooping..then later saw a group of about 20 Hoopers for Hope. There seemed to be lots of water/cytomax along the course, people out with hoses, and the race had placed misters along the way, a good thing. Crossing the finish line, there was more sun.. no shade any where!

Hi everyone! So I did my 10K tune up race on Sunday morning. The start time was 9:45AM which was nice because it wasn't first thing in the morning. We arrived around 9:15 so we could get checked in. I didn't think we were late but when we got there, they said they were out of small shirts. Oh well, DF ended up with two running shirts. They were nice because the race logo was small and on the sleeve.

What a change in the weather though - it went from sunny and hot on Saturday (80F) to cloudy and drizzly on Sunday (50F). Lots of people were complaining but I thought it was great for running :)

There was a huge turnout for the 5K and there were lots of people with strollers, little wagons, bikes and their dogs. I even saw one person who brought their miniature pony. That was cute! I wish I thought to take out my cell phone cam to snap a picture.

My goal was to run 10m/m though secretly, I did want to finish in under an hour. There weren't too many other people running so I got to start pretty close to the start line. I couldn't tell if my Garmin was off but it said that I started off at 8 m/m. I slowed down but it still said I was going at 9 m/m. So I just went by the timer and the distance markers. I got passed a lot on the way to the turn around but then passed a lot of the same runners on the way back to the finish. I remember one guy kept turning around - not sure if he was checking how far away I was but I remember in the last 2km, I caught up. So this time when he turned around, I was directly behind him :) Part of the course went underneath a highway but it was on a wooden bridge that went uphill. It was slippery because it was wet and it had raised slats every few steps. I walked it because I had a bad feeling I'd end up tripping otherwise.

The course itself was a little tight. DF who walked the 5K said that as the faster runners were coming back, they were yelling at people to get out of the way. I know there were times I ended up running on the grass to get around walkers. Makes me wonder what's going to happen at the 1/2 in May when they'll have 1,000 people out there. The porta-porties arrived just as I was finishing. They were setting them up right before the finish line. Then were lots of people walking around so I ended up tripping and dodging around people and kids. Crazy! Ended up finishing with a pace 9:55 m/m but at a time of 1:03. My Garmin said I'd gone a little longer than 10K.

Overall, it was lots of fun! They had a great lunch afterwards for us - potato salad, BBQ chicken sandwiches, fruit and cookies! Afterward, I hit the mall to go shopping! I'm trying to stay away from food rewards :)

The next time I run a 10K, I'm definitely going to push to finish in under an hour!

WISH went to CMH/M and WISH finished CMH/M!! :cool1:

Great pics, Anne

WISH looks strong and fantastic! I'm sorry the heat was so horrible.

Thanks for posting the slide show. I really enjoyed it.

Hello Everyone,

I completed the mini marathon last Saturday in Louisville. Thanks for all of the good wishes and encouragement. If you would like to read about my experience check out my thread on the Derby festival mini marathon.

Vicky, Good job on your race. Sounds as if things were a bit disorganized. Hopefully they'll work out some of the bugs before the half.
